Ava’s point of view
“I've made my decision, and I'm not changing it,” I pushed his hand off mine, took a few steps away from him, and locked my gaze with his. “I'm freeing you from this relationship. You can go and marry Lily; I'm sure she'd be a better wife for you—the one you love.”
An empty feeling in my chest weighed heavily on me, like a hollow echo, as his sharp, stern gaze remained fixed on mine.
He let out a scoff after glaring at me for a few seconds. “I see what you are doing, but listen to me. No man will ever want a pathetic woman like you. I was actually doing you a favor by marrying you, and I'm still kind enough to give you a chance.” He walked over to me, closing the distance between us, and my heart raced. “You have 24 hours to come back home, and if you don't return, I will never let you in, no matter how much you beg me to take you back.”
I clenched my fist, a sharp pang shooting through my chest as I stood there.
He scanned me from head to toe before clicking his tongue, disgust etched on his face. “You are so ugly that no matter what you wear, you’ll always look pathetic. You’d better go and change your dress.”
My heart pounded in my chest, a mix of anger and hurt as his words sank into my mind. He never missed a moment to insult and belittle me; he had always been like this for the past five years. He didn't even take me to any events because he believed I was ugly and too thin. He would call me unattractive, and while I thought I was used to it, I eventually realized it was too much to bear.
I flinched when the sound of the gunshot echoed in the air. I turned my attention to see Sophie gripping a gun in her hands.
“Get your ass out of here before I shoot you right here and now.” Her jaw was clenched, filled with frustration and anger. Throwing me one last glare, he stormed out of the apartment.
I inhaled sharply, striving to keep my emotions in check. I had promised myself that I would not cry because of him. His words cannot affect me; I won't allow them to, and I shouldn't!
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't succeed. My knee buckled, causing me to collapse to the ground. I pressed my hand against my chest, holding it tightly; the sharp pain there was unbearable, and I felt as though I was failing miserably.
“Ava…” Sophie set the gun on the coffee table before rushing over to me. She draped her arms around me tightly, pulling me into her embrace.
”Don't let his words get in your head, Ava. None of it was true. He's just a narcissist; he doesn't deserve you. You deserve better and much more, and when the time is right, you'll find someone who is meant for you. Please don't you dare cry over that jerk. If you do, I'm going to shoot you right away.”
I couldn't help but let out a bitter chuckle. She's trying to make me feel better, but right now, nothing could ever make me feel better, especially at this moment.
“I don't think I can go out with you.” I pulled out of her embrace. “I'm tired, and I want to sleep.” I rose from the ground, smoothing the wrinkles on my dress.
I just needed an excuse to stay indoors. I don't want to humiliate myself by going out. Maybe Julian was right after all; I'm just so pathetic.
Sophie let out a sigh as she rose to her feet. “Ava, please don't give him so much importance. He doesn't deserve it, nor do his words matter. Don't let him make you feel so little.” She's right. Why do I keep on letting him make me feel this way? He doesn't have the right to hurt me like that.
“Come on, let's go.” Sophie brought me out of my daze. I nodded without uttering a word.
Later That Day
Sophie forced me to go into one of the most luxurious restaurants. The air was filled with luxury, expensive perfume wafted through the air, and the sound of gossip and laughter echoed through the restaurant. Everything felt too overwhelming, and I couldn't breathe properly. I just wanted to finish eating and go back to the apartment and sleep. But our order was taking too long to come.
“Ava, are you alright?” Sophie's brows furrowed. “You've been quiet since we arrived. Is everything alright?” She stared at me, confused. “Don't tell me you are thinking about that jerk, are you?”
I sighed. At least I'm trying everything in my power not to think about him. “Sophie, I'm tired. I just want to go home and sleep.” I was emotionally, physically, and mentally exhausted. I just wanted to be alone.
“Alright, Ava, if you don't feel good, then I won't force you to stay. We can go.” She said, and I smiled at her understanding.
Sophie gestured for the waiter to come over to our table. She smiled as she stood before us.
“Please pack our order in a take away; we decided to leave.” Sophie said with a polite smile. The waiter nodded.
“As you wish, ma'am. Please wait for a few minutes, and I'll bring your order.” She said, turning her heel ready to leave.
“Please take our bill.” I handed her the menu book with few notes inside . She took it with a smile still on her lips before she walked away.
“Ava, you didn't have to pay the bill, you know. I can do it while you are still trying to figure your life out.” Sophie said.
I shrugged. “Don't worry about me, Sophie. I've been teaching kids online and earning some money for myself. I can survive this year without needing a job.” I told her. Right now, I was grateful that I took that job. At least I won't need any of Julian's money at all. I might not be rich like him, but I can survive.
Before Sophie could say anything, my eyes widened as they landed on Lily, who was approaching us. I hope she isn't going to create a scene in such a public space and humiliate me in front of the crowd.
“Ava , I'm really sorry.” Tears streamed down her cheeks as she stood in front of our table. All eyes in the restaurant turned to us. I swallowed hard.
“All Julian did was to save my life that night. I didn't mean to cause a rift between you two. Please don't be a cruel person by divorcing your husband and leaving your son behind. You can't nonchalantly leave them behind like that; they need you.” Lily was now shouting, tears streaming down her face, and she was making sure everyone in the restaurant heard her.
She came here to make me a bad person in front of the whole city, and as expected, people started murmuring, their eyes on me.
“No mother can leave her child behind no matter what happens. Please go back home; I'm sure Julian will accept you back if you beg him.”
A heat rose to my face at her words. This pretense of hers will never work on me, and I'm not going to tolerate her any longer. I left Julian, so she should stay away from me.
I pushed the chair behind, rising off, grabbing my handbag. Sophie followed the pattern by rising off the chair.
“Lily, you wanted my husband, right?” I threw her a sharp glare. Her face paled at my response. She was used to the quiet me and made me her doormat, and that was over. “Well, I'm giving him to you as a donation, or you can call it a charity. I don't know which words are suitable; you decide. But I'm giving him to you. You can have him, but please do me a favor and stay away from me. I'm not your friend, and please don't mock my intelligence by pretending to my face. It doesn't work.” Her eyes were wide open as she stared at me, but I didn't give her a chance to utter a word. I stormed out of the restaurant, Sophie followed behind me, the murmuring increased, all eyes following behind me as I made my way out.
I'm sure of one thing; this will be all over the news the next morning, but at this point, I didn't care. People can talk and do as they please. I don't care anymore.
