Ava’s Point of View
It was almost midnight, and there was no sign of Julian and Caleb. A bitter smile stretched on my lips as my eyes landed on the food on the table, now cold, the delicious aroma faded. I thought maybe we'd sit here and have dinner together for the last time, but who was I kidding? I should have known before wasting my precious time. That's how it has been since Lily arrived. He'd finish work, fetch Caleb from school, and go spend time with Lily while I sit here alone waiting for them.
The sound of footsteps echoed from the door, and my heart started racing against my chest, knowing it must be Julian and Caleb.
I sat up straight from the chair holding the padded handles of the crutches , my eyes landing on the signed divorce papers before I turned my attention to the door.
He strode in with confidence, a white shirt clung to his shoulders, and blue trousers completed his look. One of his hands in his pocket, he was the kind of guy who'd make women fall for him and shatter your heart into a million pieces. That's just how cruel he was.
His perfect brows furrowed as his brown eyes landed on me, confusion etching on his face.
“Why aren't you sleeping?” His voice had no emotions, cold and stern.
I swallowed hard, my hand clenching into a fist.
Control yourself, Ava.
I kept chanting the words in my head. I had to gather the courage to look into his eyes and tell him exactly what I wanted to say.
“We need to talk.” I forced the words out of my mouth, keeping a straight face as my gaze finally locked with his.
He frowned, confused. “Caleb, go to your room and get some sleep.” He turned his attention to our son, who simply nodded and began making his way upstairs without even sparing me a second glance, sending a sharp pang cutting through my chest.
Julian turned his attention to me now, his eyebrows raised, gesturing for me to speak.
I cleared my throat, my eyes locking with his. “I want a divorce.”
Time seemed to have stopped, the air around us tensing with my pain, the kind of pain that doesn't kill you right away but gives you a slow death with no relief. It was meant to hurt nonstop.
Julian's eyes widened, an emotion I couldn't describe flashing in his eye. It quickly disappeared as soon as it appeared, and I couldn't figure it out.
“Ava, is this about what happened at the restaurant?” His eyes narrowed impatiently as he threw me a sharp glare.
I couldn't help but chuckle. “What actually happened at the restaurant? Because as far as I'm able to remember, two things happened at the restaurant.” My stomach hardened. “Firstly, my husband was supposed to celebrate my birthday with me, but I waited for him for hours while he was with his beloved Lily and lied to my face about a meeting that was never there .” My voice was barely above a whisper.
He attempted to speak, but I raised my hand, stopping him from uttering a word. Today, I'd speak, and he'd listen. “Secondly, my husband decided to save his beloved Lily and left me inside a restaurant shrouded with fire and smoke. He chose to save Lily and left me inside. Which one are you referring to? Are you by chance talking about my necklace, the only thing my mom left for me, which you decided to give to your beloved Lily?” My fingers clenched around the corner of the table, trying to stop my hand from trembling.
Julian's jaw clenched, frustrated. “You are crossing the line, Ava. Stay within your limits,” he said through gritted teeth. “Lily is not well. She has only a few months left to live, and you, of all people, should understand that. Stop moaning about the what-ifs. You didn't die. You are perfectly fine. Lily is my first priority, and you should know that by now.”
His words were a sharp arrow in my chest, and I'm even surprised that I'm not crying right now. It was too much to bear, and there were no words that could ever describe it.
“You are right.” I swallowed the lump forming in my throat. “I blame myself for loving you more than you deserve. This is all my fault. The biggest mistake in my life was falling for someone who didn't love me back, someone who would rather leave me in a house surrounded by fire without caring whether I survive or die. It's all my fault. I should have loved you less. I shouldn't have put my life on hold for you.” My voice was quivering with emotions I tried to swallow. “I'm sorry for thinking that you'd fall for me. I'm so sorry for holding onto the hope that one day you'd look into my eyes with love and affection. I'm…” I swallowed painfully hard, blinking back the tears that threatened to burst out of my eyes.
“I won't be a pain in your neck anymore. I've already signed the divorce papers, and you can keep your son with you.” My breath was now ragged, coming in short gasps.
He didn't even get a chance to say anything; his phone rang. He slipped his hand into his pocket, yanked the phone out, and answered it. Without waiting for another second, he rushed out of the house, and I knew it must be Lily calling him.
The sobs I've been trying to stop broke free from my throat, tears streaming down my cheeks. I covered my mouth with my hand, crying so hard. My body shook with each sob I took.
How I wish I never loved him at all, and now I'm facing the consequences of loving someone who doesn't love me back. He will spend the night with Lily, and I'm crying my heart out here. Why is love so painful? Why is loving him so painful? I wonder if he'd even miss me once I'm gone or if he will marry the woman he loves and forget about me as soon as I leave.
