Evie's POV
The moment I opened the door, Martha instantly knew the evening has gone wrong for me. She has been Adams housekeeper for years, taking care of Adams in every way possible. She is so sweet, kind, and daring. She gives this motherly presence always.
I pleaded with her to get me something that could ease the pain I was feeling while I go upstairs to freshen up.
It's been hours since I left the event and Adams is yet to return. I was in the kitchen cabinet drinking the tea Martha gave to me to ease my cramping pains when I heard the front door burst open, making the walls tremble.
"Where on earth is that good for nothing woman?!" Adams furiously asked. "Martha, did Evie come home already?" He walked further into the room.
I instantly froze, I wasn't ready to take in words that'll break my heart over again
"Yes Adams, She came home not long ago; she isn't feeling well " Martha in a motherly way, tried defending me because she obviously knew I was in a loveless marriage with Adams.
"Evie!!!" Adams shouted with frustration. I carefully came out from the kitchen cabinet so as not to fuel his anger the more.
"Why the hell did you leave the event without telling me?" He fired immediately he sighted me.
I swallowed hard; barely trying to stand properly because my cramps was begining to get worse. "I wasn't feeling well" I said quietly. "I came to find you so well could leave together but I didn't find you anywhere "
"Oh please," he scoffed. "You left because you wanted to create a scene and embarrass me, right?!".
That snapped up something inside of me.
"A scene?" I repeated. "You created the scene first by leaving me in the first place, to attend to something you tag important for over an hour!" I raised my voice at him.
“I told you I had something important to attend to. You should have waited.” he spoke, scattering his hair with his hands in frustration.
A short but painful laughter erupted from my chest. “Important?” I echoed. "Now I know how important it is. By making a woman scream your name while you have s*x with her?!" I shouted, tears welling up in my eyes.
His jaw tightened, his eyes flashed something dangerous I couldn't depict.
"That was the urgent thing you needed to ‘attend to,’ wasn’t it?” I continued, my voice trembling.
“Evie...” he warned.
“No, let me talk!” Tears roll down my eyes. “I stood outside that door hearing my husband moan another woman’s name in a public bathroom. At an event we both went together as a couple."
His face darkened. “I told you before. I don’t owe you explanations and you're just my wife on paper!. You stay out of my business.”
“Business?” I scoffed. “Is that what you call it? w*****g around like a dog with anything under pants”
Suddenly, a sharp sting exploded across my cheek, forcing me a step back. My hand slowly rose to my face in shock.
“Don’t ever raise your voice at me again,” Adams growled.
I stared at him, stunned. “You hit me,” I whispered.
“You pushed me,” he snapped. “You always push me, Evie. You’re so desperate for attention.”
“Because you’re my husband,” I whispered. “And I keep trying to love you.”
“Well stop trying,” he said coldly. “I didn’t ask for your love! “You signed up for this marriage. Don’t make it harder for yourself.”
He moved past me, almost shoving my back to the wall.
I literally broke down, allowing myself fall to the ground, letting my tears flow freely.
Flashback
I was in the kitchen making dinner when the door bell rang. I quickly left all I was doing to attend to whoever is at the door. Opening the door, I met a delivery man, who has a package for me. I signed where he asked me to sign and then I walked back into my house with the package, wondering who it was from.
I opened the package and I was greeted with a beautiful dress, a pair of flat shoes, complementing the simple nude outfit, a simple necklace and a letter from the Tylers'. It was an invitation to their anniversary dinner party the following night, stapled alongside the letter, was the time and address.
I felt so important, having no choice but to honour their invitation. I couldn't refuse it, not after everything they've done for me.
I made it in time to the Tyler's mansion and I must confess, their mansion screamed wealth, almost looking like something pulled out of a fairytale. I was in awe. I made my way inside, welcomed with warm lights, soft music and laughter from almost everyone present.
“Evie!" Mrs Tyler rushed to me, giving me a motherly hug. "You made it! I'm so happy. By the way, you look stunning, sweetheart.” I blushed, lowering my gaze. Compliments were rare in my life.
“You’re too kind,” I whispered. "Thank you for the dress, Lucy. I love love it" I told her
“No, darling. I'm being honest here and I’m glad you love it,” she said, brushing my hair behind my ear like I was her own daughter.
I followed Lucy further into the living room where other guests chatted. She was introducing me to a few family friends when I heard footsteps descending the stairs. The sound of the footsteps made me wonder who it was, that instantly changes the atmosphere of the room
So I turned, wanting to see that person that strongly has an effect on everyone in the room. Immediately, I forgot how to breathe. He was the most beautiful person I've ever met. A tall handsome man, with broad-shouldered, dark hair slightly tousled like he has just ran a hand through it, his jaw so sharp making his lips so kissable. He wore a black suit that probably cost more than my one year salary.
My heart sank, then leaped, then panicked all at once. I’d never seen someone so intimidating and heartbreakingly handsome at the same time.
Mrs. Tyler waved at him to call his attention. “Adams! Come say hello.”
He walked slowly toward us, a look of disinterest plastered on his face. My palms grew sweaty. Subconsciously, I straightened my dress even though there was nothing to straighten.
“This is Evie Torres,” Mrs. Tyler introduced proudly. “The young woman I told you about.”
Adams glanced at me for two seconds, it felt so long and heavy and then, he looked away as if I was nothing but air.
“Hello,” he muttered beneath his voice.
My voice almost failed me but I tried to give a reply “H-Hi…”. Mrs. Tyler frowned slightly. “Adams. Be polite.”
He gave no other response but nodded stiffly and then turned to greet another guest, leaving me staring at the space he once occupied.
I should have been embarrassed but I wasn't. Something about his presence pulled me strongly to him. That’s the night I secretly fell for him. Clearly knowing he was out of my league but yet I couldn't stop my heart from yearning for him.
End of Flashback.
"Evie, you need to rest for the tea to work effectively" Martha touched me, bringing me out of my own thoughts. "Just give him time. He'll definitely come around I believe" she spoke, assuring me while pulling me up from the floor.
I nodded my head, wiping off my tears because I had nothing to say. I was emotionally tired and I needed to rest.
I slowly walked to my room, muttering a "Goodnight and a Thank you" to Martha.
