Chapter Four

1525 Words
Evie's POV I woke up to the morning sunlight reflecting across my room. I stretched my body, wincing a little but I feel much relieved. My stomach didn't feel like it was twisting in knots. The tea Martha made for me, worked. I made a mental note to say a thank you when I decide to go downstairs because one thing I was certain of this morning, I wasn't ready to see Adams. Not after what transpired between us last night. So, I decided to spend my day in my room, using the opportunity to check out fashion courses and also reaching out to my cousin, Elena. The last time we spoke was when she made it back to Zealand after my wedding. I went into the bathroom, did my lady thing and freshened up. I was coming out from the bathroom when I heard a soft knock on my door “Evie, sweetheart?” Martha’s warm voice seeped through the door. I opened it slightly, giving her a little smile. "Good morning, Martha," I responded. She studied my face, worry creasing her forehead. “You haven’t come down this morning. It's unlike you. How are you feeling?” “A little better,” I whispered. “Just tired...and Martha, thank you for yesterday. I'm glad I have you around here” She smiled softly and nodded. “What would you like for breakfast?” she asked me. “Anything light is fine.” I replied. Not even having the appetite to eat anything but I need to put something in my stomach so the cramps won't come back worse. “Say no more,” she smiled. “I’ll make you something delicious.” she said, walking out of my room and closing the door behind her. Martha came back to my room an hour later with my breakfast. A warm plate of fluffy pancakes with strawberries, scrambled eggs, and fresh juice. Something she called a New York comfort breakfast. Lol "I'd be going grocery shopping later in the evening," she said. "Just in case you're hungry before I get back, you could make do with the ingredients in the fridge and make something for yourself, " she added. I nodded and with that, she left my room. I ate quietly, my heart still wrapped in yesterday’s pain. I set the tray aside on the shelf beside my bed and picked up my laptop, searching the internet for an institution I could apply to, to perfect my skills in fashion design. Hours passed with me trying so hard to distract myself in the best way I could. I eventually marked out some places I saw, having it in mind to check them out next Monday. I picked up my phone and dialed my cousin in New Zealand, the only family member I had left. The phone rang twice and then she picked up. "See who we have here! Someone finally remembered she has a family somewhere" She cheerily spoke over the phone. I chuckled. "I'm sorry, Elena but trust me when I tell you I think of you all the time" "I know... and i'm sorry I haven't checked up on you also. How are you and how is Adams?" She asked. The question broke my heart over again. I sighed. "We're good," I replied. "That's good. Oh my goodness! I miss you so much." She spoke with so much excitement. "I'll surely come say hi very soon. I need to go now, Elena. Take care of yourself and my sweet regards to my cute niece and Jayden" I told her. She replied, "yes I will. Bye Evie!" "Bye" I quietly responded, hanging up the call. A dull ache had returned to my abdomen, making me feel so uneasy. A glass of warm milk should help, I thought, making my way downstairs. I made it downstairs, turning toward the kitchen area and every hope I had left, disappeared. My whole world came crashing down. Right on the dining table is my husband, Adams having s*x with another of his fling! They barely had their clothes on, shamelessly grabbing each other. Their moans filling the entire room. "Adams!" I called out to him, my hands shaking uncontrollably. He didn't flinch, he glanced at me and continued like I wasn't there. My world shattered in one heartbeat. My legs almost gave up on me. Unable to withstand it, I ran back to my room, shaking so hard I could hardly breathe. My tears blur my sight. "I can't take this anymore!" I whispered, crying so hard. "I can't! I've tried and this is the last humiliation I'm going to take". My eyes landed on the drawer where I hid the papers he gave me six months ago. It was the divorce papers I couldn't bring myself to sign because I still had hope. The hope of Adams finally seeing me and then realizing my love meant something. But tonight proved it all. He never cared, he never loved me and he never will. I opened the drawer with trembling hands, and I pulled out the divorce papers, I stared so long at the divorce papers, memories from three years ago flooding through my mind. Flashback "Evie, we need your help" Mrs Tyler pleaded with her eyes. She looked really disturbed alongside with Mr Tyler My throat tightened. Wondering what they needed my help for? Why do they seem this worried? They clearly have everything and there's no help someone like me has to render to them. I gulped down, “What… what’s wrong?” I asked. Mrs. Tyler's fingers twisted in her lap while Mr Tyler rubbed his forehead in frustration. “It’s Adams. It's been scandals upon scandals, women posting images of their intimate moment online. Our board is furious, and the media won’t let it rest. He keeps tainting our reputation.” Mrs. Tyler replied, eyes glassy. “We’re losing him and we don’t know what else to do.” Before I could respond, the memory of the night I first met him hit me like a wave. “What do you want me to do?” My voice cracked, because I already feared the answer. Mr. Tyler looked me straight in the eyes. “We want you to marry him.” To say I was shocked was an understatement. “Marry Adams?!” I asked again to be sure I heard right. Mrs. Tyler squeezed my hands gently, “He needs you, Evie. Someone who is strong enough to reach him and show him the love he thinks never exist.” “He doesn’t even look at me twice.” I said, staring intensely at both of them. “Yes, he does,” she whispered. “Not the way you think, but he notices you and that’s something.” I shook my head, "I don’t think he wants a wife.” “He doesn’t,” Mr. Tyler admitted. “But he needs one.” The silence between us feels so heavy. I really do owe Lucy and Richard a lot. They were literally my angels in human form and I'll forever be indebted to them but this? This is different. Mrs. Tyler’s voice cracked. “I know we’re asking too much but we really trust you with him and we believe you could help him change" Tears stung my eyes, uninvited. “Why me? Why not someone else?” She cupped my cheek like a mother comforting her child. “Because you’re the only person he looks at differently and you're different from those ladies he messes around with” Ever since I set my eyes on Adams, I had loved him in silence and this was the closest I would ever get to him. I nodded slowly, "I'll do it" Mrs. Tyler exhaled, widening her eyes, “Are you sure, Evie?". She tearfully asked me. "I'm sure, Lucy. I've secretly loved Adams for years. I fell hard for him from the very first day I set my eyes on him and if showing him how much I love him will change him, I'll do it" Loving Adams Tyler was never the problem but pretending I didn’t, was the real punishment. Flashback ends “I’m sorry, Lucy.. Richard…” I whispered. “I’m so sorry but i can't do this anymore” I picked up a pen, signed the divorce paper, and carefully put it back into the envelope. I went downstairs to find Adams, to give him what he has always wanted but he was nowhere to be found. I searched every room but there was no trace of him, not even the woman. Mrs Martha has gone to get groceries, I didn't expect her to be home. I placed the divorce papers on the dining table, the same spot I saw him with the woman. I went upstairs, packed everything I own, everything I held so dear that won't remind me of the pain I was experiencing now. "I'm done, Adams. I free you tonight." I muttered with tears in my eyes. I walked out of the mansion and never looked back.
