Chapter Five

1623 Words
Adams POV Carissa had walked into my office that afternoon, just when I was about leaving to go pick up a document I left at home. She always has a way of turning me on and I've never for once had the strength in turning her down. The document was so important, I told her to come along with me, so I wouldn't have to spend so much time as my meeting is in an hour 's time from now. The moment I stepped in, the house felt so quiet I had thought Evie wasn't in, I decided to satisfy my crazy urge, doing a quick one, right there in the living room. I was having that heated moment with Carissa when I heard my name. "Adams!!" Evie's voice broke through the moment. She looked like she had just seen a ghost, tears rolling down her cheeks. I felt it again. The sharp pains I feel in my chest whenever I make Evie cry. I ignored the feelings by acting like I hadn't seen Evie. I continued my make out session with Carissa but right there at the spot, the s****l urge I had felt, wasn't longer there. Evie's teary face kept flashing right through my mind so I stopped. "dress up and let's go" I said to Carissa as I buttoned up my shirt. She was pissed I had to stop the moment and decided to throw a tantrum like she normally do. "but why?? you can't leave me like this" she blurted out. I was about to give her a response when Dylan's call came in. "Hello Adams, where are you?" Dylan's voice sounded so desperate. "I quickly came home to pick up the documents needed for the meeting." I replied, catching my breath. "What's wrong?" I questioned "The Abyss Enterprise came earlier than expected and they're waiting to see the presentation for the project, they're here to sign" he replied hastily. "I'm on my way. I'll be there in fifteen" I hanged up, hurrying Carissa to get dressed and meet me in the car. I reduced the urge of going up to check up on Evie but I had no time on my side. I promised to speak with her when I get back. I really need to change and stop hurting her. I hate to see her cry, I don't know but every time it breaks something in me. "Adams, did you hear what I had just said?" Carrissa broke through my thoughts. "Just let me be" I quietly fired back. The sight of her started to irritate me. She raised her voice, "Don't get us killed, Adams. You're driving with so much speed!" Her screeching voice sounded so irritating. "Get out!" I calmly said as I tried to pack. "You must be joking?" She slightly chuckled. "I want to believe you're not deaf. I said GET. OUT." I gritted the words out. She hurriedly opened the car and scurried out. 'Evie please hold on, I'm ready to make it right.' I thought as I drove to my office. Evie's image, flashing repeatedly in my mind. I put a call through to my driver, Mark to wait outside at the office entrance so he could help park the car at the car park while I rushed into the office to close the deal with the Abyss Enterprise. I sighted Mark the moment I drove into the office building. I got down from the car, picked up the documents I had gone home to pick and handed the car keys to Mark so he could park the car at the garage. He's been my driver for years now. He previously walked for my parents as their driver before he started being my personal driver, and I trust him with my cars, whether in my presence or not. After a very long day from work, I walked into the house, prepared and ready to talk to Evie about what had transpired today but then, something seems off the moment I walked through the door. The house feels empty and so quiet in a strange way. The homey feeling it always has, wasn't there any longer. I waved off the feeling because I might clearly just be overthinking things. “Martha?” I called, my voice echoing through the empty hall. I heard nothing. "She might have gone out shopping for groceries," I thought out loud. I glanced around, about walking into the kitchen to get a drink to ease my sore throat when my eyes landed on the brown file sitting on the dining table. I didn't remember leaving it there. I picked up the file, knowing it's a document meant for me because it has my name on the outside. I hesitated for a moment before I opened it but then, I opened it and the very first word that I saw, made my heart stop for a minute. It was the divorce papers I had thrown at Evie a few months ago, forcing her to sign it. But why is it here? I thought. Fear slowly creeping into my heart. I looked at the end of the paper and her signature was so bold on the part where she had agreed to end this marriage. I couldn’t breathe. My hands trembled, and I struggled to make sense of what I was reading. "This wasn’t happening," I muttered. "Not now, not like this" I shouted. "Evie!" I shouted, my voice rough and desperate as I ran so fast to her room. Lo and behold, it was empty. Her closet had none of her clothes in it. A chill ran down my spine, and I felt the weight of it settle in my chest. I've never felt this scared in my life but right now, I couldn't comprehend the fear that was building up in my chest. "I caused it! I was coming back home to make it all right Evie!" I painfully shouted. Tears welling up in my eyes. I sat on her bed for a long time, inhaling her scent. Flashbacks of how I treated her played like movies before my eyes. "I should have been nicer! Please don't leave me" I tried to gather my words. I need to look for her, I thought. I hurriedly went downstairs and fortunately, Martha was just entering in, carrying the bag of groceries in her hand. "Martha, did Evie tell you where she's headed?" I asked, concluding Martha knew about it "Evie?" She asked ,looking confused. "Yes..." I sighed. "She left me! She left martha" I ran my hands through my hair, frustrated. "I was coming home to make things right after what happened this afternoon "What happened? What did you do this time again, Adams?" Martha questioned, almost looking pissed. I rubbed my face with my palm, I couldn't even bring myself to talk. "She met me making out with one of my flings" I slowly chose my words "Adams!! Adams!" Martha freaked out. "This is the height of it all! This is your matrimonial home! Even if you don't respect this marriage" she said, her voice laced with pains Pacing aimlessly around the room, knowing Martha is right. “I lost her, Martha. Even when she showed me how much I loved her, I still treated her like s**t! ” I whispered. My voice is barely audible. Martha walked to the dinning and dropped the groceries bag, and then she came back to face me. "I watched you grow with so much love in your heart and a lot of respect for women. What went wrong, Adams?" She sighed, taking a sit on the sofa close to her. I had nothing to say honestly. My strength failing me, I leaned against the wall for support. " I know you've never wanted this marriage but this lady treated you with respect. Above all, she showed you love" Martha broke the silence, her voice barely losing its strength. "The least you could have done was to treat her like a human being! Did you even try to get to know her? Did you?" Martha asked me, looking hard at me. I had no response so I kept quiet. "Now she's out of your life. You can have the freedom you've ever wanted!" She shakes her head, carefully standing up to her feet. My heart dropped to my stomach. The weight of the truth finally settled in. I didn’t deserve her. I never did. Martha stood there, watching me with pity in her eyes. She knew the truth, she knew what I had done to her. What I had done to Evie. “Martha…” I whispered, my voice hoarse with grief. “I never realized how badly I hurt her. I came home to make things right but now it’s too late.” Martha didn’t say anything for a moment, but then she spoke again. “You never deserved her, Adams. You never did. She loved you more than you could ever love her.” Her words hit me like a slap. I could feel every bit of guilt and every regret. “I’ll find her,” I said, my voice suddenly filled with determination but my eyes filled with tears. “I’ll find her and beg for her forgiveness. I’ll fix this, Martha. I’ll make it right.” Martha shook her head, her eyes filled with sadness. “I wish you luck, Adams. That's if you get to find her earlier before it's too late” Martha sadly spoke up, leaving me to myself. “I’ll find you Evie and I'll make it right.” I repeated, the words feeling like the only thing left I could hold on to.
