The knock came just as Athena finished closing her suitcase. The sound was soft, but it carried through the quiet of the apartment with a kind of finality she hadn’t been ready for. For a moment, she stood still, her hand resting on the handle, as if delaying even that small act of turning toward the door might give her a few seconds more. It didn’t. She exhaled, steadying herself, and walked over. When she opened it, Bobby was already there. He looked the same as he always did—composed, put together with an ease that never seemed forced. Crisp lines, clean edges, everything in place. Only his eyes betrayed him. There was something in them that hadn’t settled. “Ready?” he asked.
