“Pathetic.” Jeremy scoffed as he stood up, the chair scraping harshly against the hardwood as he shoved it back, his shoulders rigid, eyes blazing. Without another word, he stormed out through the doors, disappearing into the night. Sophia rose almost immediately. “Please excuse me,” she murmured, voice soft with concern, before hurrying after him. The silence that followed was thick, broken only by the clink of silverware. I stared at my plate, my appetite gone. My fingers traced the edges of my book, but I couldn’t focus on the words. The image of Jeremy’s face raw, furious, wounded kept replaying in my head.
