Chapter 4

926 Words
Amelia's POV My eyes widen. Accident? I shake my head, trying to piece together the missing piece of my memories. "I don't remember anything," I eventually tell her when all my effort in remembering what happened yields no reason. The only thing I was able to achieve was an increased throbbing of my head. "You were in an accident and you wrapped your car around a tree." She moves over to my side and starts checking on the monitor and IV attached to my arm while I'm trying to make sense of what she just said. "How long have I been out for?" I ask. "A few hours," she replies. "Thankfully you were wearing your seatbelt and didn't sustain any fatal injury. You do need to keep that cast on your legs for a few weeks though." At the mention of a cast, I lift the blanket on my body and peep down to find that my right leg is really covered by a blue cast. How did I not notice that sooner? The door to the room opens again, and another woman walks in, but instead of the scrub that the nurse has on, she's wearing a sparkling white coat with a stethoscope around her neck and a clipboard in her hand. She smiles brightly at me as she inches closer to the bed. "It's nice to see you up." I give her an answering smile. "How are you feeling?" She asks when she gets to my bedside. "My memory is foggy and I have a huge headache." I mentally check my body to see if any pain arises but nothing comes up. "Other than those two things, I feel ok." Her smile widens. "That's good to hear." She retrieves an ophthalmoscope out of the front pocket and shines it into my eyes. "You hit your head when you had the car crash, and it seems to have led to a concussion, which will explain the headaches that you're experiencing." She pockets the ophthalmoscope. I nod in understanding. "What about my memories? Why can't I recall anything about the accident or what led to it?" I ask anxiously. She smiles reassuringly at me. "I'm sure they will all come back in due time. It was a traumatic experience and it will take a while to recover from it." She moves away from me and starts writing on her clipboard. "I'll administer some painkillers to help you with the headaches." The checkup continued for a few more minutes before they finally left the room after injecting some painkillers into my IV. My eyelids threaten to flutter shut as the painkiller starts working its magic. I'm halfway asleep when the door leading to the room that I have been placed in opens for the third time today with a loud bang. I look over at the door, expecting to find the nurse or doctor but instead, I find a wide-eyed man rushing into the room. He's wearing a suit that looks like it was slept in, his hair is dishevelled, and his eyes have huge dark circles. He looks around the room anxiously and his brows furrow when they land on me. Confusion brews within me at his strange presence. Did he lose his way and end up in the wrong room? "I got a call that you were in a ghastly car accident." His eyes peruse my body and his eyes suddenly harden. "You look ok," he sneers. "Was this all a trick to get me to come here?" I blink. My confusion increases the more I stare at the stranger in front of me. "Who are you?" I ask softly, forcing myself to sit up straight on the bed and leaning my back on the headrest. The stranger pauses, and for a few seconds, he stares at me silently before a bubble of laughter tears out of his mouth. He throws his head back and his chest vibrates. The sound of his laughter sends chills down my spine. It doesn't sound like it's coming from a place of amusement. If possible, it sounds deranged. When he looks back at me, his eyes are glimmering with tears and disbelief is still in his eyes. "Is this the best that you could come up with?" He asks and thunders over to me to clasp my arm in a tight grip. "A fake accident that led to you losing your memory?" He mocks, hate seeping through every last one of his words. "Did you throw yourself down the stairs, or did you purposely crash the car just so I wouldn't end up leaving you, making you penniless." Fear clamps around my heart as I look up at the deranged and crazy look in his eyes. I try to pull my hand out of his tight grip but he just tightens his hold, causing a whine to leave my lips. "I don't know what you're talking about," I gasped, my gaze frantically flying over to the closed door, silently praying that either the nurse or doctor would come barraging through the door and take this insane man away from me. "Please, let go of me," I beg, the painkiller making my muscles weak and unable to fight his stronghold. He laughs humourlessly. "I'm guessing the accident conveniently also made you forget about the fact that you cheated on me?" He asks dryly. "You must have forgotten all about how you broke your marriage vow." His words give me a pause. Marriage vows? What the hell is he talking about?
