Chapter 5

1048 Words
Amelia’s POV I open my eyes wide since I found it hard to fall asleep, the words of the strange man who left some hours ago can’t stop ringing in my head and it makes my head ache the more. If I am married to him like he claims, why am I not wearing my wedding band? There was no wedding band on his finger either, while he was here. There has to be a mixup somewhere, that man must have mistaken me for someone else and I’m glad he has gone even though he promised to be back. “How do you feel now, Mrs Thompson?” A nurse asks, her words make me snap out of my thoughts. “Did you say Mrs?” I inquired, “Yes, I did. Is there a problem?” She stare at me weirdly before responding. I get it now, there isn’t a mixup anywhere, and truly, I’m married to the man who claims to be my husband. Why then did I cheat on him if I’m married to him? “The man that you allowed in some minutes ago, he’s my husband, right?” I want to be sure so I ask the nurse. “Oh yes, that’s Mr Thompson, your husband” She replied. I won’t be surprised if I find out that I have kids for him already and that we have been married for years now. The nurse may not know much about me so I won’t ask her too many questions. Judging by his words to me when he was here, we don’t have a happy home and I must have caused it by cheating on him like he said I did, he couldn’t have lied. I heave a deep sigh and it isn’t of relief. I pictured his face in my head and the look he wore while he was here, he looks like someone I’ve hurt so much. “How long will it take for me to regain my memory?“ The nurse isn’t done with me when I ask, She continue to check my vital signs and didn’t act like I just asked her a question, maybe the tubes of the stethoscope in her ears didn’t let her ears catch my words. “I’m sorry, but we can’t give you a specific time. The good news is you’ll be discharged in a few hours from now and you’ll be given medications that just might help you regain your memory on time” She eventually respond. “Is there something we can do? I need to regain my memory as soon as possible.” I raise my voice a little while I speak to her, I know nothing about myself and I’m not finding it funny, I don’t even know my name, my age, and who my parents and siblings her. “I’ll advise you don’t raise your voice because of your condition, you may lose your memory permanently if care isn’t taken” She coo and turn to leave, I don’t want to lose my memory permanently so I swallow the words I have for her, I will have to scream if I want her ears to catch my words as she is on her way out already. The best thing that can happen to me right now is for me to regain my memory so I can recall why I hurt my husband by cheating on him with another man. ***** Hours have passed by and the man who claims to be my husband is here again, his countenance didn’t change and it is a sign that I still irk him so much. “Here are the divorce papers, sign them at your earliest convenience and get them back to it” “Div….orce” I mutter. “Due to what we shared in the past, I wrote you a cheque. You’ll find it in the middle of the papers and do with it whatever you want” His words. He walk out on me without bothering to hear what I have to say. He should at least wait for me to be discharged or even regain my memory before doing this. In his words, I cheated on him so this is bound to happen. It could even be that we both agreed to get a divorce before the accident, it might be my idea at first. I don’t know how to feel about all of this and it feels like I am losing my mind. Tears refuse to roll down my cheeks and it must be because I still think this is all a dream. Another nurse show up at my face and in her hands were papers, perhaps my alleged husband forgot to drop them with the ones I dropped earlier. “Your discharge papers are ready but your husband has refused to sign them, I guess you…” I listen to the rest of her words with my deaf ears, Remaining in this place will make me lose my sanity so I got up on time, even before the nurse finished speaking. My head ached terribly but I know I’ll be fine. The discharge process is finalized and with the divorce papers in my hands, I stepped out of the hospital. I found in between the papers some cash and I know my alleged husband put it there on purpose. “Pending the time I regain my memory, I'd better lodge in a hotel” I murmur. My eyes are everywhere as I keep walking down the road, I feel like a stranger wandering around a town and I just may be lucky enough to find a hotel by the roadside. “Amelia” A voice echoes. I found out that was my name from the divorce papers while I was in the hospital, I pause and search around for the person who screamed my name. “I was scared something bad had happened to you” A stranger mentioned after showing up right in front of me, his hands are on my shoulder. “I’m glad you’re fine, Sister. We need to head home” He reach out for my hand before saying. I snatch my hand off his hand, I won’t go anywhere with a stranger.
