She divorced him

The sitting room was exactly how she remembered it. Her brother, Jason, was seated in a man-spread position, flipping through a magazine while taking sips from the cup of coffee before him. She didn't make her presence known, not until he looked up from the magazine. His eyes went wide, and the cup slipped from his grip. He jerked when it burned him, frantically shaking his hand as he searched for burnt. His gaze went up again, slower this time, like it was all an illusion. But there she was, life and direct. “Hazel?" he called, his tone laced with disbelief. He stood up and took slow steps towards her. “Am I dreaming?" She shook her head, and wrapped a hand around him, burying her face in his chest. " I'm sorry, I won't leave again. I promise." She missed him. She never realized it until then. " Did you hit your head?" Jason held her head up, staring into her eyes, his expression a mix of confusion and supprise. Hazel understood. In the past, she refused to come back. She always believed things would work out. " No. I mean it." Jason released a long breath. One he never knew he'd been holding. It went quiet for a while, then he spoke. “I'll take your words for it.” His tone held a hint of warning, but Hazel didn't mind getting scolded. She lifted her head, her big blue eyes stared up at him, her lips pushed out in a pout. “is mom asleep?" She asked. Jason let out a throaty laugh. " Come on." He pulled her up the stairs. The lights in the master's bedroom were out, athe curtains hung low, leaving a c***k that casted a faint glow into the room. Hazel could still make out the large walk in closet, the floor to ceiling window and the side of the wall where her father's portrait stood. It's been three years. But the memory stayed fresh. She stepped forward, while Jason lingered at the door. The lights suddenly came on, she gasped, coming face to face with Sarah Smith, arms crossed while she leaned against the headboard. " Hazel?" The woman called, stunned. For a moment she thought it was Jason again. " Mom," Hazel's voice cracked, her body trembled as the encounter at the Hart's mansion replayed in her mind. she stepped closer. "I thought you'd never come back." Despite Sarah's strong resolve, Hazel saw relief in her eyes. The way her shoulders relaxed, her gaze following every step Hazel took. When Hazel reached the bed, Sarah pulled her close. "Hit me all you want. I did terrible." Hazel lifted Mrs. Smith's hand, bringing it down on her face. The old lady snatched it away, her voice breaking. "Don't." She shook her head, tears rolling down her chin. "Don't run away like that ever again." Mrs. Smith had opposed her union with Felix. When Hazel realized things wouldn't work out, she ran, took on a new identity to be with him. " I won't. I promise." She sobbed. Mrs Smith helped her into bed, and for the first time in 2 years, Hazel felt what peace actually felt like. "Sleep tight." Jason called from the door. Sarah barely acknowledged him. He left, the door clicking shut. "Mom..." "Not now, Hazel. You just got home." Mrs. Smith turned off the lights, laid down, and wrapped her arms around Hazel, staring into the darkness. Next morning, " You want a divorce?" The family had settled for breakfast when Hazel broke the news to them. She wants a divorce from Felix. The breakfast bar went silent, almost suffocating. " You want a divorce?" This time, Mrs Smith asked. Hazel nodded, determined. Mrs Smith was at a loss for words while Jason was different. He took a good look of her skin. They've turned pale, too pale. His jaw tightened. His sister had been wrongly treated. He reached for her hand across the table, squeezing tightly. “I'll arrange for the divorce papers." He said voice sharp and firm. Hazel nooded, blinking back tears, just as Mrs Smith put down her glass. "What are your plans for the future?” “I plan to take back my place in the family's business." Two years ago, Hazel had given up her position as the heir of Smith's group to join Felix. Her words earned her a nod from her mom. " There's a business event coming up next week. Since you're back for the company, it'll be good to make a public appearance." She said, cutting into a piece of steak. Hazel didn't object. ******** When Felix received the divorce papers, he couldn't help but let out a mocking laugh. “I see she grown wings. Don't come running back to me Hazel. Because it'll be too late then.” He said more to himself than anyone else as he scribbled down his signature with more force than intended. ****** The rest of the week passed like a blur. Seated at her vanity table, Hazel did the finishing touches on her makeup. Her dress was simple yet elegant, a black belted maxi dress that graced her figure perfectly. She threw on a blazer to go with, accompanied by a black stiletto. By the time they arrived the event, it was already in full swing. Perfect way to make an appearance. She walked in with Jason, her hand gently wrapped around his. As expected, heads turned, and whispers rose from the sides. Who would have known that the lady from the Smith family would suddenly make an appearance after two years of going MIA? The young bachelors smoothed their suits, each trying to make a good impression. News spread around quickly. Some said she was married, others said she eloped with a lover. Standing a short distance away, Felix stood, hand in his pocket, drink midway to his mouth but not there yet. His eyes narrowed, fist clenched, and something twisted in his chest. The whispers from the crowd was getting too much. Each sending an invincible punch to his gut. The Smith's had a daughter? How come he never knew? For a moment, their gaze locked. She was the center of attention, while he stood there like a nobody. His pulse quickened. One week ago, she was his wife. The submissive one. But seeing her standing there looking all powerful and strong, Felix couldn't tell what her next actions might be. If words gets out that they were married and how he treated her... His reputation would be gone for good. He couldn't let that happen. He couldn't lose face just when he'd gotten to the peak of his success. He must set the pace in his favor. With that in mind, he gulped down the last of his drink in one go, then walked up to the stage. Light flashed from every angle. Perfect. Felix puffed his chest,a cruel smirk crossed his lips as his hands tugged in his pocket. " So this is the reason you wanted a divorce?" He said, his confidence coming tenfold. " I should have known Hazel. You took advantage of my love for you, and now you're flaunting yourself in public?" The temperature dropped zero degrees. The hall went quiet. Too quiet. He let out a mocking laughter, slow and menancing. " I'd advise everyone here to be weary of this woman. She's full of schemes and calculations. One minute she claims she loves you, living off your wealth, and the next she dumps you like a piece of trash!" Crack! The hit was quick and sudden. Felix could have sworn he had a view of hell.
