Chapter 3

Selena’s POV Calista never came back to the pack house that day. That evening, just as the sun was setting behind Mount Parnitha, I received a call from the Hellenic Pack Guard. They asked me to come in for questioning. My heart froze. I didn’t understand. But I went. They told me she had been in a car accident on the old mountain road outside Athens. Her car had lost control on a sharp curve. It skidded off the cliffside road and crashed into a ditch below. It caught fire. Calista was pronounced dead at the scene. Cause? Brake failure. They looked at me and said I was the last person who had seen her alive. My stomach dropped. I answered every question calmly, even though my wolf was shaking inside me. I told them we met at a café in Kolonaki to talk. I told them we made peace. I even showed them the receipt. The timestamp. The security cameras confirmed everything. But that didn’t stop the whispers. The pack already believed I was jealous of her. And now she was dead. Of course they would think it was me. I don’t know what kind of influence my father used within the Council of Alphas, but somehow, my name was officially removed from the suspect list. Officially. But I knew Leonidas wouldn’t believe it. And I was right. Word spread across the packs of Attica that he had become obsessed with finding the truth. He was convinced someone had tampered with the brakes. In our world, accidents like that didn’t just happen. And the easiest person to blame? Me. Months passed. The Pack Guard ruled it an accident and closed the case. But Leonidas never let it go. I thought maybe, deep down, I would feel satisfied. The woman who took my future… my place beside the Alpha… was gone. But instead, I felt nothing but guilt. Because even if I didn’t kill her… I had wished she would disappear. I had imagined what life would be like if she wasn’t there. And now that she wasn’t… It felt wrong. Leonidas was grieving. I could feel it through the bond our wolves still recognized but refused to accept. I wanted to go to him. To hold his hand. To tell him I was sorry. For everything. But I couldn’t. Still… He noticed me. I went to Calista’s funeral in Thessaloniki. I wore black. I said nothing. I stood at the back near the cypress trees, trying not to be seen. As soon as the ceremony ended, he appeared beside me. Before I could step away, he grabbed my wrist. Hard. I winced. “What the hell are you doing here?” he growled under his breath. His wolf was right there, just beneath the surface. I turned to face him slowly. “I came to pay my respects.” He let out a cold laugh. His jaw was tight. His eyes were red — not from shifting, but from crying. “You’ve got some nerve, Selena.” I opened my mouth to answer, but he cut me off. “Tomorrow. Ten in the morning. The Pack Registry in Athens.” I blinked. “Why?” His eyes locked onto mine. “We’re getting married.” My breath stopped. Then he released my wrist and walked away before I could say a single word. I should have known something was wrong. I should have questioned it. But I didn’t. Because I was desperate. Because I was still in love with him. Because some foolish, broken part of me believed this was fate giving us another chance — a second bond blessed by the Moon Goddess. So the next morning, I went to the Pack Registry of Athens. In a white dress. Like a pathetic, lovesick omega who still believed in fairy tales. Leonidas didn’t even look at me. The High Registrar of the Alpha Council read the vows. We signed the mating contract under the ancient wolf seal of Attica. The judge congratulated us in a flat voice. There were no pack members. No celebration howl. No kiss. Just the sharp echo of the ceremonial gavel and the sound of my dream dying quietly. The drive to his Alpha estate near Mount Penteli was silent. Too silent. I kept twisting my fingers into the fabric of my dress. My wolf was restless. Nervous. I kept wondering what was going on inside his head. He didn’t look at me once. His jaw was tight. His eyes were distant. Cold. Grieving. I kept reminding myself: This is supposed to be the happiest day of my life. I just married my first love. My fated mate. But deep down… I think I already knew. I had made a terrible mistake. The car stopped in front of the stone Alpha mansion overlooking the Aegean Sea. He finally turned to me. His expression was empty. “You know why I did this, don’t you?” he asked. My heartbeat stuttered. I shook my head slowly. “I know you killed her.” Everything inside me froze. He leaned closer, his wolf pressing against the surface. “You called her out that day so you could tamper with her car. I know it. You were always jealous of her. And now she’s dead.” “That’s not true—” I started. “I don’t want your lies,” he snapped. “The Pack Guard may have let you go because your father sits on the Alpha Council. But I won’t.” My mouth went dry. “You’re wrong…” He pulled out his phone and shoved it in front of my face. A photo. Grainy. Blurry. Taken from a distance. It showed me standing in the parking area outside the Kolonaki café — near Calista’s car. But I had never gone near her car. I didn’t even know what she drove. I didn’t know the color. The brand. Nothing. It was clearly manipulated. But Leonidas didn’t see that. Or maybe he didn’t want to. “That’s your proof?” I whispered. “And this.” He swiped to another image. A screenshot of an anonymous message. She did it. Selena killed Calista. She admitted it to me. I stared at it in disbelief. “Anyone could have sent that.” “You think I care?” he said coldly. “You killed the woman I loved.” Then he leaned closer and whispered the words that changed everything. “If the law won’t punish you, I will.” And that’s when it hit me. This wasn’t a second chance. This was a sentence. I hadn’t married him. I had been claimed for punishment. “I’m going to make your life hell,” he said calmly. Too calmly. “You’ll live under my roof. Eat my food. Follow my rules. But you will never know peace.” His eyes were empty. “You wanted to be my Luna that badly? Then be prepared for everything that comes with it.” He stepped out of the car. And left me there. Frozen. My wolf whimpered inside me. Tears filled my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. I had walked into this. Blinded by love. By guilt. By stupidity. For three years… I paid the price. Three years of cold silences. Three years of emotional exile inside the Alpha mansion. Three years of sleeping beside a man who treated me like a criminal. And then one day… It was over. Not because he forgave me. But because I left. Now I was on a plane, leaving Greece behind. Leaving the Attica Pack. Leaving Leonidas. I was heading to a distant wolf territory in New Zealand — a neutral land far from the Alpha Council’s influence. I had no plan. No job. No allies. But I had something he didn’t know about. I placed my hand gently over my stomach. I was carrying his heir. Our child. And that was enough. No more Leonidas. No more humiliation. No more begging to be loved. I leaned my head back against the seat and closed my eyes. This time… I would rebuild. Stronger. Smarter. And never again would I let love turn me into a victim.
