Chapter 9: The First Strike 🥰

The legal documents felt heavy in my hand, but in a good way. They felt like a sword. "The Indian developer signed?" I asked, not looking up from my desk in the corner of Alexander’s office. "He didn't just sign," Alexander replied, his voice a low purr. "He was thrilled. Apparently, Kelvin never paid him the final installment of the 'hush money.' He was more than happy to sell the master rights to Thorne Industries." I stood up. "Then it’s time. Kelvin is meeting with the Ministry of Technology at 2:00 PM today to finalize the Smart-City contract. He thinks it’s the deal that will make him untouchable." Alexander checked his watch—a gold piece that probably cost more than Kelvin's car. "We have twenty minutes. Are you ready to see the look on his face when his 'empire' turns into a crime scene?" "I've been ready for seven years," I said. We arrived at the Ministry building in Alexander’s blacked-out Rolls Royce. As we walked through the lobby, people whispered. Alexander Thorne didn't go to the Ministry often, and he certainly didn't go with a woman who looked like she owned the sun. We pushed open the double doors of the conference room. Kelvin was there, leaning over a map, laughing with a government official. Anabel sat beside him, looking bored and entitled. When the door hit the wall, Kelvin looked up. His smile died instantly. "Zainab? What are you doing here? This is a private government briefing." "Actually, Kelvin," I said, walking to the table and dropping a folder right on top of his map. "This is an intellectual property dispute. You are attempting to sell software that doesn't belong to you." The government official frowned. "What is the meaning of this, Mr. Uzor?" "She’s lying!" Kelvin stammered, his face turning a sickly shade of grey. "She's just a bitter ex-employee trying to cause trouble." "Ex-employee?" I let out a sharp, cold laugh. "I’m the architect, Kelvin. And as of ten minutes ago, Thorne Industries owns the exclusive patent for every line of code in your 'Smart-City' project. If you sign that contract, you’re committing a felony." The silence in the room was deafening. Kelvin looked at the documents, then at Alexander, who was leaning against the doorframe with a terrifyingly calm smile. "Zainab, please," Kelvin whispered, his voice shaking. "Don't 'Zainab' me," I snapped. "The war is here, Kelvin. And I’m just getting started."
