It was Diane's 20th birthday.
She had long promised to host her birthday party at one of the most luxurious restaurants in the city. Now that the day had finally come, the girls were on the moon.
“Woo-hoo!” Diane screamed with her hand dancing in the air as she maneuvered the wheels of the new Jeep her mum had gifted her for her birthday through the city streets with her friends.
The wind tousled their hair through the open windows while they continued with their carefree chatter.
“Guys hear me out,” one of the girls said, “You know what would be absolutely crazy?”
“What?” Diane asked curiously from the driver's seat.
“Running into your crush at the restaurant. I heard he has a secret office around there."
The girls screamed and giggled excitedly at the statement. It did sound crazy.
"Oh my gosh, I'd literally die!" Diane screamed and almost bumped in the car ahead of them.
There were sudden shrieks and gasps from the girls but Diane was quick on the brakes and brought the vehicle to a screeching halt just in time.
“You see what I'm saying? Just the thought of it and I'm going mad.”
“I've seen him a few times during his swimming games, but running into him? Nah…” she paused, “Just imagine if he talked to me... y'all better prepare my grave 'cause I'll..." Diane clicked her tongue and theatrically sighed, mimicking the gesture of slicing her neck with her hand.
“We're here guys,” Diane announced when the car neared the restaurant where they'd be having the party of their dreams.
The girls squeaked excitedly and started preparing the things they had brought with them for the party. Diane pulled the car over in one of the designated parking spaces and was the first to get out of the car.
She put her sunglasses on and approached the entrance in the classiest manner, already pulling out her ID from her purse as well her VIP pass, which was another gift she'd gotten through her mom's connections.
However, the response she received wasn't what she'd expected, because, instead of the security welcoming and ushering them in, they were blocking the entranceway.
“We're currently not accepting any customers as the place is fully booked.”
Diane frowned, “What?” Glancing at the space inside the restaurant.
“It looks pretty much empty to me.”
The security pointed towards a sign that clearly displayed that the place was indeed already booked. .
"This is so unfair! We were planning to make a reservation too!" She whined and clenched her fists in annoyance as she'd already seen all her party plans falling to the ground. She couldn't accept it
The security tried to make her understand that they could try again next time or in a few hours. But Diane was unwilling to accept the situation.
“This is bullshit,” she cursed and was already stomping back towards her car when she felt another set of fingers wrapping around her wrist and holding her back.
Diane was about to snap at the person but was instantly silenced when she saw who it was.
"It is you, Sky," the man said to her in a chuckle of disbelief.
It was none other than her celebrity crush, Rydar, standing in front of her, touching her and even speaking to her! Diane thought for a seeecond she was seeing things. The man of her dreams couldn't possibly be standing in front of her, that too, talking to her!
This had to be a dream, she concluded as waves of shock and disbelief continued cruising her insides. Chills covered the pores of her skin. Eyes and mouth agape, she stood there wordless.
Diane's fan-girl dreams colliding with reality was impossible; it was too much for her to handle.
“Am I dreaming?” She asked aloud.
Diane turned to her friends to confirm she wasn't. And when she realised that this was very real, Diane let out a piercing scream of exhilaration, to which her friends joined in and were jumping around.
The topic of their unserious chatter earlier had become reality in seconds like the flick of a magic wand. Rydar smiled cluelessly. He must have forgotten that aside from being a normal guy who'd finally found his lost mate, he was also a celebrity.
“I can't believe this,” Diane squeaked with tears in her eyes and walked back to where Rydar stood. “Someone pinch me please… I might faint. You're even more breathtaking now that I'm looking at you this close up....oh my gosh."
He smiled and put his hands on her shoulders and Diane shrieked again with joy. Rydar pulled her to his chest, wrapping his arms around her and resting his chin on her hair. Her mouth hung open again. Was she just casually in the arms of the almighty Rydar Turner? Her mother had been hundred percent correct when she said she was a very lucky girl.
“I looked for you everywhere," he began, patting her head gently. Where have you been all this while, Sky?"
“I'm such a huge fan….” she squealed in his chest and then paused.
Did he just say he looked for her everywhere?
Did he...did he just call her Sky?
Diane’s body instantly jolted as currents of shock and passed through her body.
There was only one person in the whole world she knew, who was the splitting image of Diane, and that was Skylar.
Her forgotten fears were triggered like a dormant ember suddenly being sparked to life. Her body tensed up with an unsettling vibe.
The memory of that day a year ago, when she'd pushed her sister to her death, sliced sharply through her mind and a chill went up her spine. Diane quickly pulled out of the hug like one in a daze.
“Are you okay?” Rydar asked.
She stepped a few paces away. “Y—yes…yes..”She nodded.
Cold sweat broke out on her forehead. Diane was running out of her mind and she knew she was going to have a panic attack any moment from then.
“I think I need to go,” Diane stuttered.
"I need to go," she repeated and turned away to leave.
“Hey—” Rydar tried to stop Diane, but she bolted to her car.
Rydar wasn't going to let "Sky" out of his sight this time without getting to talk to her and at least finding out where she'd been all this while and what had happened to her.
"We need to follow that car!" Rydar ordered, rushing to his own car while his manager and bodyguard hurried behind him.
“I just got some information on the girl you asked me to look into earlier,” the manager announced as he jogged behind Rydar to the car.
“I don't need that anymore,” Rydar concluded, jumping into the car seat, “Just follow that green car, I already found who I've been looking for.”
