Chapter 13: Silent Departure

1138 Words
The fire crackled softly in the hearth, casting golden light across the shadowed room. Lila sat curled against Dante on the old velvet couch, her fingers absently tracing the edge of his sleeve. There was a warmth to the moment, something fragile yet intoxicating, as though the rest of the world had fallen away and left only them. Dante’s arm rested lazily around her, but his hand grazed the small of her back, a slow, deliberate touch that sent shivers down her spine. They’d been talking for hours about her life, her dreams, and bits and pieces of his past he was finally willing to share. But the conversation had stilled now. There were no more words, only the sound of their breathing mingling with the crackling fire. When Lila turned her face toward him, their eyes met, and for a moment, neither of them moved. It was Dante who closed the distance, his lips brushing hers with a gentleness that seemed almost at odds with his intensity. Her breath caught, and she leaned into him, her hands finding their way to his shoulders. The kiss deepened, slow and deliberate, and Lila felt herself melting into him, into the heat of his touch and the unspoken promises between them. His hand slipped to her waist, pulling her closer, and the sensation sent sparks through her body. “Lila,” he murmured against her lips, his voice low and heavy. “Yes?” she whispered, her heart hammering in her chest. He pulled back slightly, his dark eyes searching hers. “Are you sure about this?” Her cheeks flushed at the question, but she nodded. “I trust you,” she said softly, her voice trembling but resolute. Dante exhaled, his grip on her tightening as though her words had broken some final barrier within him. He kissed her again, more urgently this time, his hands roaming to her hips and pulling her firmly against him. Lila felt the heat of his body, the fire in his touch, and her thoughts dissolved into nothingness. As his lips traveled to her neck, leaving a trail of warmth in their wake, she let out a soft gasp. The sensation was overwhelming, yet she couldn’t bring herself to pull away. His fingers traced the curve of her spine, igniting nerves she hadn’t known existed. But just as the moment threatened to consume them, Dante froze. His body tensed beneath her touch, and his breathing turned sharp, erratic. “Dante?” Lila asked, her voice laced with concern. He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he pulled back, his hands lingering on her hips as though he couldn’t quite let go. His dark eyes locked onto hers, filled with something she couldn’t name something raw and haunted. “You’re a virgin,” he said finally, his voice low but edged with disbelief. Lila’s cheeks burned, but she nodded. “Yes... I am. Why does that matter?” Dante ran a hand through his hair, standing abruptly. The tension in his posture was palpable, his jaw tight as though he were fighting some unseen force. “It matters more than you think,” he said, his voice strained. Lila sat up, confusion and hurt twisting in her chest. “Dante, what are you talking about? What’s wrong?” “I can’t do this,” he said sharply, pacing the length of the room. “I shouldn’t have brought you here. I shouldn’t have” “Shouldn’t have what?” she interrupted, standing now. Her voice was shaking, but anger simmered beneath her confusion. “Kissed me? Held me? Made me believe that this was real?” He stopped pacing, his back to her. “It is real,” he said quietly. “Then why are you pulling away?” she demanded, her voice cracking. “What are you so afraid of?” He turned to face her then, and the look in his eyes stole the breath from her lungs. There was pain there, deep and raw, but also something darker something that made her stomach twist. “I’m trying to protect you,” he said finally. “Protect me from what?” “From me.” The words hung between them, heavy and suffocating. Lila felt her knees weaken, and she reached out to steady herself on the edge of the sofa. “You’re not making any sense,” she said, her voice trembling. “You can’t just leave me like this, not after everything.” “I don’t have a choice,” he said, his tone colder now. “Bullshit,” she snapped, her anger flaring. “You’re scared, Dante. That’s what this is about, isn’t it?” His jaw tightened, but he didn’t respond. “Don’t do this,” she pleaded, stepping closer to him. “Don’t shut me out.” Dante’s hands balled into fists at his sides, and for a moment, she thought he might actually listen to her. But then he stepped back, his expression hardening. “I’m sorry, Lila,” he said, his voice hollow. “I have to go.” “Dante, wait” But before she could reach him, he disappeared. One moment he was standing there, and the next, the room was empty, the air heavy with the faint scent of smoke and ash. Lila stared at the empty space where he had been, her chest tightening as tears blurred her vision. She sank to her knees, her hands clutching at the fabric of the sofa as sobs wracked her body. He was gone. The man who had made her feel alive, who had made her believe in something bigger than herself, had left her without so much as an explanation. And she didn’t know if he was ever coming back. The days that followed were a blur. Lila went through the motions of her life like a ghost, her mind stuck on Dante and the way he had disappeared. She told herself she wouldn’t cry anymore, that she wouldn’t let him break her, but the tears came anyway, late at night when the silence of her apartment became too much to bear. She reached out to him calls, texts, even emails but there was no response. It was as if he had vanished completely, leaving no trace of himself behind. Her friends tried to console her, but they didn’t understand. How could they? She couldn’t tell them the whole truth that Dante wasn’t just a man, but something more. That their connection felt like it was written in the stars, even if it was tearing her apart. But even as her heart broke, Lila couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t the end. Somewhere, deep in her soul, she knew Dante would come back. She just didn’t know if she could survive the waiting.
