The city skyline stretched endlessly in every direction, bathed in the warm glow of the late afternoon sun. Lila stepped out of the elevator on the top floor of the Morningstar Enterprises skyscraper, the air around her feeling a degree colder than it had just moments before. The hallway ahead was vast, pristine, and eerily quiet. Her heels echoed against the marble floors as she approached the large black double doors Dante Morningstar had directed her to earlier.
After a sleepless night replaying every word of their tense, almost flirtatious interview, Lila had convinced herself that the job offer was either an elaborate prank or a trap. But when Dante’s assistant an unnervingly cheerful woman named Selena had called her that morning to confirm, Lila had no choice but to show up. The strange thing was, she hadn’t signed the contract yet. And yet, here she was, reporting for duty.
Taking a deep breath, Lila pushed open the doors.
Inside, the same luxurious office she had seen the day before greeted her. The floor-to-ceiling windows provided a dizzying view of the city below, but it was the man seated behind the massive black desk that drew all of her attention.
Dante Morningstar was the kind of man who could dominate a room without saying a word. He leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled as he watched her with an expression of amused indifference. His dark eyes held an intensity that made her feel exposed, as if he could see every secret she tried to keep hidden.
“You’re late,” Dante said, his voice smooth and unhurried, like molten chocolate.
“I’m three minutes early,” Lila replied, glancing at the clock on the far wall.
He smirked, leaning forward slightly. “I run on my own time, Miss Hart. You’ll learn that soon enough.”
Lila refused to be rattled. “Noted.”
Dante gestured to the chair in front of his desk, and Lila sat, crossing her legs and clasping her hands in her lap. She could feel his gaze lingering on her, and it took every ounce of self-control not to fidget under the weight of it.
“I’m glad you decided to accept the offer,” he said after a moment.
“Technically, I haven’t accepted yet,” Lila pointed out. “I haven’t signed the contract.”
Dante’s smirk widened, and the flicker of amusement in his eyes sent a shiver down her spine. “You walked into this building again, didn’t you? That’s acceptance enough.”
Lila narrowed her eyes. “That’s not how contracts work.”
“Contracts are only as binding as the people who enforce them,” he replied cryptically, leaning back in his chair. “But if you need the formality, we’ll handle it after I show you the ropes.”
Before Lila could respond, the door to the office swung open, and a tall, elegant woman with sharp features and sleek, platinum-blonde hair entered the room. She wore a black pantsuit that looked custom-tailored, her heels clicking against the floor with the precision of a metronome.
“Interrupting something?” she asked, her voice smooth and icy.
Dante’s expression tightened slightly, and Lila could sense an undercurrent of tension between them. “Lila, meet Selena, my assistant and your point of contact for all administrative matters.”
Selena’s sharp eyes raked over Lila, her lips curling into a faint, condescending smile. “Charmed,” she said, her tone suggesting the opposite.
“Likewise,” Lila replied, refusing to be intimidated.
“Selena will show you to your desk,” Dante said, standing and straightening his suit jacket. His presence loomed even larger when he was upright, and Lila couldn’t help but notice the way the light from the windows seemed to dim ever so slightly around him.
“Wait,” Lila said, rising to her feet. “What exactly is my job? The details in the offer were... vague, to say the least.”
Dante’s gaze locked onto hers, and for a moment, she thought she saw something flicker in his dark eyes something ancient and dangerous.
“Your job, Miss Hart, is to assist me in all matters. Some of them will be mundane, others... less so.”
“That’s still vague,” she said, crossing her arms.
“You’ll learn quickly,” he replied, his voice dropping to a softer, almost intimate tone. “And trust me answers if you weren’t capable, you wouldn’t be here.”
With that, Dante turned and walked toward the massive windows, his silhouette framed against the cityscape. The conversation was over, leaving Lila with more questions than answers.
---
Selena led Lila through the maze of offices that made up Morningstar Enterprises' top floor. The employees they passed barely glanced up from their desks, their movements almost mechanical. It was eerie how quiet the office was, considering the building’s massive size.
Selena finally stopped in front of a sleek, minimalist desk tucked into a corner near the executive wing. “This is you,” she said, gesturing curtly. “Your computer is set up. You’ll have access to Dante’s schedule and correspondence, but don’t go snooping. He doesn’t like it when people overstep.”
“Good to know,” Lila replied dryly.
Selena’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Word of advice, new girl: don’t let him get to you.”
“What do you mean?” Lila asked, but Selena was already walking away, her heels clicking against the floor.
The rest of the day passed in a blur. Lila familiarized herself with the office’s systems, scheduled meetings for Dante, and responded to a handful of emails that felt oddly cryptic. By the time the sun began to set, the top floor was nearly deserted, and Lila found herself alone at her desk.
She leaned back in her chair, stretching, when she heard it a low, whispering sound that seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere at once.
Frowning, she stood and glanced around the empty office. “Hello?” she called, her voice echoing faintly.
No response.
As she turned back toward her desk, a shadow flickered at the edge of her vision. Whipping her head around, she saw nothing just the dimly lit hallway leading back to Dante’s office.
“You’re being paranoid,” she muttered, shaking her head.
Still, the feeling of being watched lingered long after the whispers faded.
---
By the time she gathered her things and headed toward the elevator, the floor was completely silent. She pressed the button and waited, her nerves still on edge.
As the elevator doors slid open, Dante was there, leaning casually against the back wall, his hands tucked into his pockets.
“Long day?” he asked, his voice startling her.
“You could say that,” she replied, stepping inside.
The doors closed, and for a moment, the only sound was the soft hum of the elevator descending. Lila could feel his presence beside her, overwhelming and intoxicating.
“Get used to it,” he said, glancing down at her. “This is only the beginning.”
There it was again that flicker of something otherworldly in his eyes. She wanted to ask him what he meant, but the words caught in her throat.
When the elevator reached the lobby, Dante stepped out first, turning back to give her one last look.
“Be careful, Lila,” he said, his voice a low murmur. “You’re playing a dangerous game.”
Before she could respond, he was gone, disappearing into the night like a shadow.
And for the first time, Lila realized she wasn’t just stepping into a new job. She was stepping into a world she didn’t understand a world where the rules were written in shadows and fire.
