The next few days after the drinking thing had really made me realise that Zack had been right, I had needed to make a choice for myself. I had needed to kick my own backside. Not only that, the alcohol had also helped me realise that I couldn't carry on like I had been; this hadn't been me.
One morning I woke feeling a little hopeful and I knew I had to run with it. I knew I had to make the most of this hopeful day, so I grabbed a quick shower, got dressed into a wool dress top, put some leggings on and decided to put my hair up as I stood in the bathroom looking at my reflection I told myself quietly that today was going to be a good day; today was going to be the start of getting back to the old Rosa. I knew there'd be days I'd fall off and fall into the pit again, but for now, today was going to be a good day.
After my little pep talk to myself, I went downstairs and went into the kitchen to make a coffee. As I went to flip on the kettle, I froze. No. I wasn't going to sit around in the house and drink coffee; that was only going to ruin this hopeful good day I wanted to have. I picked up my phone off the kitchen counter and flipped through my numbers in my phone until I found Jen's number. I hit the call number and put it to my ear. Today is going to be a good day.
"Hey Rosa, is everything ok?" I could hear a slight hesitation in her voice.
"Yeah, I was just wondering if you and Hunter want to meet up for a coffee if your both able to." I told her.
"Oh... Ummm, I'm busy today with Eric sorting stuff out, but I can send Hunter along. I'm sure he'd love to get out of the pack for a bit. Unless you want to come by here for a coffee?"
"Umm..." Today is going to be a good day! "I don't think I'm ready for that just yet. Baby steps for me at the moment."
"Oh?... Oh! Oh god, I didn't think about that. I am so sorry..."
"It's ok." I laughed as I lent against the counter. "If you could let me know what Hunter says,"
"I'll give him your number and tell him to call you and sort it out." Jen laughed softly. "It's nice to hear this from you again. I was starting to get worried."
"Time." I told her quietly. "It all takes time."
"Well, don't push yourself too hard; take it easy and rest." Jen told me softly. "Right, I better go. I'll talk to you later. I hope this is the start of you getting back to you."
"I'm trying." I told her softly. "I hope everything goes ok for you both." I pulled the phone away, hung up, and took a slow, deep breath. "Step in the right direction." I told myself quietly. "I can't take the boys out for coffee, so I'll have to improvise." I went and made myself a slice of toast and as I pushed the bread down into the toaster, my phone rang. I grabbed it quickly and answered.
"Hello?"
"Hey Rosa. Jen said you wanted to talk to me." Hunter's voice sounded light and happy. Just what I needed today—someone who would help me stay in the frame of mind I'd woken up in.
"Yeah, I was wondering if you wanted to grab a coffee."
"Sure, but do you mind if we grab it while I walk my dog?"
"You have a dog?" I was a little confused. A wolf with a pet dog—there was something funny in my mind about that.
"I am part human too, you know." Hunter laughed. "I can't promise Shadow will be on his best behaviour, as he tends to not like people."
"That's ok, I'm sure we'll get along, as I'm not a big fan of people either, only certain ones though." I laughed as I went and took the toast out and perched the phone on my shoulder as I went and got the butter and buttered the toast.
"I'll bring his muzzle, as I'm not going to risk it. I mean, where I take him, there's hardly anyone there." I threw the knife into the sink, put the butter back and then took a bite out of the toast.
"Well, I've got a whole day to burn." I told him as I spoke with the toast in my mouth.
"Are you talking to me with your mouthful?" I could hear the amusement in his voice as I chewed the toast quickly and swallowed it.
"Was." I answered with a laugh. "So... whatever you want to do today, I'm game for as long as I don't have to go to the pack."
"Ah... that explains Jen's comment about no pack with you at the minute." He laughed. "I'm pretty sure we can take Shadow on a good walk. Just make sure you wear warm clothes, as it gets a little nippy where I go. So I'll see you in an hour or so."
"Sure."
"By the way, am I allowed to ask what's brought this change of heart on compared to when I last saw you?"
"Yeah, I guess you could say your sister's cocktail brought on the change of heart." I laughed. "See you in an hour or so." I hung up, put my phone down on the side and took to eating the rest of the toast that I had. Today was certainly going to be a good day. I would make sure of it.
