Jill playfully slapped Alex. “Not funny.”
“I’m guessing being with a woman didn’t freak you out, then?”
“You were worried about that, weren’t you?”
“Nah…” Alex said playfully. She looked into Jill’s eyes and could feel the tears welling in her own. Alex’s face changed and her voice took on a serious tone. “You’ll never understand how terrified I was and still am.”
“Why?” Jill put a hand against Alex’s cheek. “Please help me understand, Alex. When I see you in so much pain, it makes my heart ache.” The normally strong and confident Alex was struggling with her words and blinking back tears. Jill sat up in bed, propped a couple pillows behind her, and motioned for Alex to rest her head against Jill. Alex lowered her head to Jill’s chest and Jill put her arm around her.
