Unfortunately, I needed a supplement to my full-time job to meet the bills.” “He was a patient?” Alex tried to hide her surprise. “No, his sister was.” Alex studied Jill’s face but asked no further questions. She hoped Jill would elaborate on her own, but she didn’t. The withdrawn look was back on Jill’s face, and her eyes were distant. Her answers were robotic and monosyllabic. Alex struggled with where to go next with the conversation, not wanting to lose the connection she felt earlier.
