Chapter 1 - James

My head rattles as the judge bangs his gavel down. "The defendant is remanded without bail to be held in the Clinton Correctional facility until such date as a trial is granted." I look up at my lawyer, some f.ucking hot shot apparently, although I'm beginning to doubt that status. "Relax," he tells me condescendingly. "Relax?" I growl, "I've just been sentenced to be held, without bail, until a f.ucking trial starts. And I'm not exactly being held close to home. You came highly recommended but I'm beginning to regret my decision to hire you." I stand up as I finish talking, towering over him, and reminding him who the f***k I am. "I understand Mr. Collins," he takes a step back and I can see the sweat beading on his upper lip. I know this guy is a criminal attorney, but he clearly hasn't dealt with our type of clientele before. Not one where he has to worry about an entire brotherhood coming for him if he f.ucks this up. "We'll start an appeal soon, and I'll be bringing in another lawyer to help with this. A top lawyer in the firm, I assure you we are taking this seriously." "Fine," I snap at him. I don't say another word as I get the cuffs put back on me and the guards begin to lead me out. "We'll take care of this," Thor, my VP says quietly as we stop and wait for them to open the door. "I already have a call into Jimmy. I'll be there to see you tomorrow, get me on the visitor list." I nod before they march me out. They put me on a bus, I get strapped into my seat like they're afraid of me, f.ucking p.ussies. I put my head back against the seat, taking stock of my surroundings. There's only one other prisoner on this bus, then three guards, and the driver. I still don't know how the f***k I got here. The last thing I remember is going out with the guys, then I wake-up covered in blood with cops crawling all over some f.ucking motel they found me at. And there's a dead woman on the bed in the room I was staying in. I don't remember a single f.ucking thing that happened that night, but I know without a doubt that I didn't k.ill that woman. And that means I'm being set-up but I don't know by who yet. It feels like it takes for f.ucking ever to get to the prison. Once we get there and I get escorted off and all f.ucking checked in they bring me to a cell. Thank f***k there isn't anyone else in here, maybe I'll actually be able to get some sleep. "Hey," I look up and see Jimmy standing outside my cell. "Thank f***k," I blow out a breath. "Thor said he'd reach out, guess I actually got lucky for once that you were already here." "Nah, I actually had the night off but a buddy of mine switched shifts so I could come in tonight." "Thanks for that then." "Don't sweat it. You won't have a bunk mate tonight, but we're short on beds so it's very likely you'll get assigned one soon. I'm going to try to make sure you get someone that seems safe, but you know that's never a guarantee in here. Watch your back, I can't be on shift 24/7. I have friendly co-workers but only one or two I would trust to keep an eye on you for me. I'm on tonight, doing rounds so I'll be making sure the cells are locked and I'll be walking by here the rest of the night. Get some sleep while I'm on and you don't have to worry about anyone else being in your cell." "Thanks Jimmy, I appreciate that." "Anything for you guys, you know that." "I keep telling you, you don't owe us anything. Since you're right here though, can you get Thor put on my visitor list? I'll need to talk to him as soon as possible tomorrow." "You got it. Now sleep." I give him a nod and lay down. Jimmy's a good guy, his old man was a real s.hit bag. Beat the s.hit out of his mom and him so badly one time they ended up in the hospital. Jimmy was only 10 I think at the time, but he had been trying to protect his mother. The club took care of his old man, who was a brother at the time, then supported the two of them until they were able to get back on their feet. Jimmy has been loyal to the club ever since then. He never had a desire to join, so he isn't a brother, but he looks after the club, and we look after him. I fall into a light sleep, even knowing Jimmy's watching out for me, I still have to keep my wits about me. He isn't the only guard in here, and I'm sure some of them have it for me, or they owe someone who does. I'm really hoping this fancy a.ss lawyer is able to get me out of here soon. I get woken up the next morning when my cell slams open. "Rise and shine sleeping beauty," some a.sshole snaps at me. I take my time getting out of the bed, just to p.iss him off. He walks into the cell and stands right in front of me. "So, we got some hotshot one percenter in here huh? You might want to watch your back while you're in here. Lots of guys itching to get their hands on you." "Bryant," someone yells and the guard in my cell, who must be Bryant, turns around quickly. "Step away from the prisoner and get your a.ss to work." Bryant nods and leaves without looking back, then some other a.sshole stands outside my cell staring me down. "You got anything to add?" I taunt, but he doesn't answer me right away, just keeps looking at me. If he thinks he can intimidate me, he's got another think coming. "I'm the Correctional Captain for this prison." "Wow," I whistle at him, "and what did I do to deserve such a visit? I'm assuming you don't usually concern yourself with visiting us lowly prisoners." "You would be correct in assuming that. But you're not just a lowly prisoner are you? Despite what you might think, not everyone working here is an a.sshole. Some of us got into corrections to actually make a difference here. Don't get me wrong, I'm not naive enough to think all of you f.uckers can be rehabilitated, but I know some can. There are a lot of rumors flying around this place about you. I don't want any trouble in my prison that's going to land a s.hit ton of paperwork on my desk. Be careful, watch your back, and don't start any trouble. You do that and we won't have any problems with you here." "Aye, aye, captain," I give him a mock salute, and he glares at me. "Your lawyer called, he'll be here to speak with you later. It'd be a shame to tell him you're in solitary and can't speak." I don't say anything just stare at him, he stares back at me. After a few minutes he nods and walks away. I'm not sure about him, he could be a good guy, so to speak, or he could be trying to throw me off. I'll need to have Thor tell Hacker to look into him.
