Chapter 4: Beneath the Surface The days after Rex’s unsettling words drag by, each one heavier than the last. I can't shake the feeling that something’s not right. The ship is still gliding smoothly over the ocean, but inside, things feel turbulent. Every time I look at Steven, I see something different in his eyes—a shadow, maybe, or a hint of something he’s not telling me. It’s impossible to ignore. I keep thinking about what Rex said. "People like Steven... they don’t do things without a reason." The words loop over and over in my mind, gnawing at me like a persistent itch I can’t reach. This evening, we’re on the deck again, the sky stretched out above us like a velvet blanket, dotted with stars. The cool breeze is a relief from the stuffy warmth inside the ship. I’m leaning against the railing, looking out at the endless water, trying to clear my head. But the more I think, the more questions I have. "Everything okay?" Steven’s voice breaks through my thoughts, smooth as always, like he’s never anything but calm. I turn to see him walking toward me, his steps confident, his hands tucked casually into the pockets of his jacket. There’s that look in his eyes again, that unreadable look, as though he knows exactly what I’m thinking. I shake my head, brushing a stray strand of hair from my face. "I’m not sure," I admit, my voice quieter than I intend. "There’s something about all of this that doesn’t sit right with me." Steven’s eyes soften, but I can see the flicker of something else—something guarded. "What do you mean?" I hesitate. I don’t want to sound paranoid, but I can’t help it. "Rex. What he said. About you. About your... reputation." Steven’s face tightens, the warmth in his expression quickly replaced by something colder. "I told you, Maria. Rex is full of lies. He has a way of making people question everything, and that’s exactly what he wants you to do. He’s trying to get into your head." I take a step back, crossing my arms tightly over my chest. "But what if he’s right? What if I’m just a pawn in your game?" Steven’s eyes flash, his jaw tightening. He steps closer, not touching me but coming so close I can feel the heat radiating off him. "I’m not playing games with you, Maria," he says, his voice low and intense. "I told you from the start—I’m doing this for both of us. To get back at the people who’ve wronged us." I meet his gaze, my heart pounding in my chest. His words sound convincing, but there’s something about the way he says them—something too smooth, too rehearsed. "But I don’t know you," I reply, my voice shaking just a little. "I don’t know what you’re really after." He sighs, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "Maria, you have to trust me. I’m not asking for anything more than your help in taking down the people who deserve it. I want them to feel what it’s like to be betrayed, to be powerless. But I can’t do it without you." I glance down at my feet, trying to process everything he’s said. His words should be enough to make me believe him, but the nagging doubt in the back of my mind refuses to go away. I can’t help but wonder if there’s more to this than he’s letting on. Just then, a figure steps out of the shadows, cutting through the tension between us. My heart skips a beat when I see who it is—Rex, of course. "Isn’t this cute?" he drawls, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "The lovebirds having a moment?" I’m not in the mood for his games, and neither, it seems, is Steven. His expression hardens, and for a moment, I can see a flicker of anger flash behind his eyes. "Rex," Steven says, his voice sharp. "What do you want?" Rex steps forward, his hands clasped loosely behind his back, his smug smile ever present. "Just wanted to remind Maria here that nothing stays hidden on a cruise ship. Secrets have a funny way of coming to light." I feel a cold shiver run down my spine, but I refuse to let Rex see my fear. "What are you talking about?" I demand, trying to keep my voice steady. Rex’s smile widens, his eyes gleaming with something dark. "Oh, come on, Maria. You’re smarter than that. You know exactly what I mean." He turns his gaze to Steven, the challenge unmistakable in his eyes. "But I’m sure Steven’s told you everything, right? About his little... past?" I glance between them, confusion swirling in my mind. "What past?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper. Steven’s eyes flash with something dangerous, but his voice remains calm. "Don’t listen to him," he says, his words clipped. "Rex is trying to stir things up. He’s desperate." But Rex is already moving closer, his eyes fixed on me like a predator sizing up his prey. "I think you deserve to know the truth, Maria," he says, his voice low and teasing. "Steven’s not who you think he is. He’s not the charming billionaire who’s come to sweep you off your feet. No, Maria. He’s a man with a past that’s far darker than you could ever imagine." My heart races in my chest. "What are you talking about?" I ask, panic rising in my throat. Steven steps forward quickly, blocking Rex from getting any closer. "Enough, Rex," he snaps, his voice dangerous now. "I warned you to stay out of this." Rex laughs, his eyes filled with amusement. "You can’t keep her in the dark forever, Steven. She’ll find out eventually." Before I can ask what Rex means, he turns on his heel and walks away, leaving behind an air of tension so thick I can almost taste it. I’m left standing there, staring at Steven, who’s seething with anger. "What was that about?" I demand, my voice shaking with a mix of confusion and fear. "What does Rex mean? What past?" Steven takes a deep breath, his anger visibly simmering beneath the surface. "It’s nothing," he says quickly, almost too quickly. "Rex is just trying to get inside your head. Don’t listen to him. He’s trying to manipulate you." I don’t know if I believe him. The way Rex spoke, the way he seemed so sure of himself—it made it feel like Steven was hiding something, something big. I step back, my eyes narrowing. "Then why don’t you tell me the truth, Steven?" I demand. "Why is Rex so confident that you have a dark past? Why can’t you just tell me?" Steven hesitates, his expression tightening. For a moment, I think he might actually tell me. But instead, he closes the distance between us in two quick strides and takes my hands in his. His touch is firm, urgent. "Maria," he says, his voice low. "I’m telling you the truth. All you need to know is that we’re in this together, and I’m not going to let anything happen to you. I’ll protect you, I swear." But his words feel hollow, like he’s trying to convince himself as much as me. I pull my hands from his, the air between us crackling with unspoken tension. "I don’t know if I can believe you anymore, Steven," I say softly, the doubt in my chest threatening to spill over. He doesn’t respond right away. Instead, he stares at me, his expression unreadable. Finally, after a long silence, he speaks, his voice barely above a whisper. "I never wanted to put you in this position," he says, his tone quieter, almost apologetic. "I never wanted to drag you into my mess. But I can’t stop now. I need you, Maria." I look up at him, unsure of what to think. Part of me wants to believe him. Part of me wants to trust him, to let go of the fear and just follow him wherever this is going. But the other part of me—the cautious, logical part—knows something isn’t right. And I’m scared of what might happen if I ignore it. Before I can say anything more, Steven turns and walks away, leaving me standing alone on the deck, the cold breeze ruffling my hair. I want to trust him. I really do. But the more I think about Rex’s words, the more I wonder if I’m getting in over my head. And as the ship continues to sail through the night, I can’t help but wonder: What is Steven really hiding?
