Her sleep turned ugly fast. It started with her finding herself in the office of the sleazy bastard who wanted her to disrupt his wedding. Recalling the way his bride had killed her, Georgina opened her mouth to refuse him. Scene shift. A dark room. One candle. Tied tight, head down. "You dared talk back?" A man with a bloodied, barbed whip stepped in. She tried to scream. Her mouth was gagged. The whip cracked. Pain like fire burst in her body. Another shift. A room. A hand dragged her back towards the bed. "Where are you going, Rae?" Malcolm’s voice. Wet kisses landed on her neck. Clothes ripping. A cruel hand grabbed her. "No! Stop!" She wept. Georgina jerked awake, her face covered in tears. "What the hell was that?" Georgina muttered, wrapping herself in a long robe as she came out of the bathroom. Sitting by the dresser, she toweled her wet hair, pondering what she had just seen. The raw, frightening feeling that clawed at her heart during those scenes was just too real. A chirping ringtone sounded from the bed. Georgina rose, curious, walked over to where a sleek phone was lying next to a black purse. She picked it up. A lock screen featuring her own face popped up. In the picture, she looked thinner, her hair straightened and dyed burnt orange. The anxiety in her grew. The phone chirped again, showing message notifications. Georgina placed her thumb on the fingerprint scanner. It opened without hesitation. She viewed the messages from someone saved as Darlea. I know you probably hate me by now. I know that what I did was wrong and wicked. I have no choice. They were going to use me to trade for a fake peace treaty with the wolves, which I know will not work out. At the end of the day, I'm the one whose life will be used for sacrifice. I know you're probably thinking that I pushed you into danger by having you take my place. And that's true. I'm sorry, Georgina. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me somehow! Well, s**t. Georgina flopped onto the bed. Anger didn't even begin to sum up the fury stirring in her chest. How dare she? Making Georgina take her place in a marriage with that homicidal werewolf? Another chirp. She checked the phone again. I already wired 3,000,000 dollars into your account. I know that you might think I'm buying your compliance, but please, accept it. Georgina's eyes brightened. She checked her account balance and relaxed on the bed like a total boss. Three million dollars. That was insane. With an idiotic grin, she rolled on the mattress. Never, not in her twenty-four years, has she earned, not to mention, seen such huge money. If this was the reward for marrying a maniac disguised as a gentleman, then she would willingly accept marrying hundreds of them. Knock, knock, knock. "Come in," Georgina called out, deliriously happy. Ester stepped in, and the air in the room felt instantly sucked out. Georgina bolted up from the bed like it was set on fire. She hurried to get down, nearly twisting her ankles. "Sir, I mean, Mr. Lacrosse. What are you doing here?" Ester raised a lone brow at her question. Georgina mentally kicked herself. After all, the man owned the house. "Eh, I mean, I didn't think you would come see me after..." Georgina trailed off, suddenly realizing that continuing that sentence wouldn't be good. "After?" Ester probed, his head tilted. Georgina clamped down on her tongue and feigned innocence. She blinked rapidly, hands clasped tightly in front of her. A perfect picture of an innocent. Silence stretched between them. Ester chuckled once, crossing his arms. "You know how to keep your mouth shut, that's good. Maybe I won't rip your head off later." His expression turned grave. "There are three rules for you to follow. One, you don't ever approach, talk to, or even look at my son. I don't want to ever see you near him, even for the faintest second. Do you understand?" Georgina nodded, shaking like a rag doll. "Number two, I don't want you to get any stupid idea that this pathetic marriage is real. It's not. I am not now, or ever, going to touch you, so don't even think of trying to get close to me." Even if you and I were the world's last hope in repopulating the earth, I'd rather die a virgin than come within three feet of you, Georgina internally sneered. Outwardly, she gave a firm nod, keeping her countenance completely humbled. "And lastly, whenever there's an occasion that needs the attendance of both of us, you are to make time for it. Failure to comply will bring dire consequences." He gave her a look that clearly communicated he would gladly administer those consequences if she dared go against his wishes. Sadistic bastard. She couldn't believe she had been fanning for him as a reader, believing he was the perfect male lead. Of course, she had no choice but to accept her reality now. Georgina stewed, watching Ester leave. She fell face-first onto the bed, grunting into the sheet while kicking her legs out behind her. Sitting up, Georgina took a few deep, calming breaths to steady her overflowing emotions. She picked up her phone, downloaded several high-security apps, and dumped everything she remembered from the novel into a secure folder. Locking it behind heavy encryption. Come to think of it, Darlea wasn't mentioned much in the novel. No, wait… Then she remembered. Darlea’s existence was summed up in three lines. Just that she died mysteriously during the first year of marriage. Georgina’s mood soured. Great.
