"Do you know how upset I was? I had to hear from Kendall and her friends that they were invited to your wedding with the infamous Golden Reaper, while I, your best friend, had no idea at all!"
Georgina mentally chuckled at the pouting girl who clung tightly to her arm as they walked toward their lecture hall. To keep up Darlea’s tough reputation, Georgina maintained a perfectly calm and unbothered expression, hiding her amusement.
She took in the campus: exotic flowers, paved paths, and beautiful stone buildings. Students moved in small groups, laughing as they headed to their lectures.
But as soon as Georgina passed by, the atmosphere changed immediately. Whispers erupted, and eyes fixed on her with a mix of awe and fear. The crowds of elite supernatural students parted quickly, clearing a wide path for her as if being too close might invite trouble. She could only catch bits of the low murmurs.
"...That's the Derbyshire villainess, right?"
"...The Golden Reaper actually married her?"
"...They will probably end up killing each other, you know..."
"Hey," Nadia pulled her along, keeping her voice down. "Ignore them."
Nadia turned and glared fiercely at a group of staring vampires until they scattered. "You’re fine. The Golden Reaper won’t kill you unless he wants a total werecat-werewolf war. Besides, I’m Nadia Hemigan. I’ve got your back."
Georgina raised an eyebrow, channeling Darlea's trademark sharpness. "How did you find out I got married since I didn’t tell you?"
"My dad’s on the Werecat Council. The wedding was mandatory," Nadia replied, before suddenly dropping back into her dramatic routine. "Yet you still didn't invite your best friend?"
Georgina reached over and playfully squeezed her cheeks. "You know exactly why I didn’t."
Nadia’s playful act faded, and her voice softened. "Yeah." She paused for a second before wiggling her brows suggestively. "Still, maybe he’s not a total monster. Maybe he’s completely different with you behind closed doors."
If that actually happens, Georgina thought dryly, I will gladly eat my own designer heels.*
Professor Whitney turned out to be a woman who always looked like a storm was brewing. She taught supernatural business, and no one dared to breathe loudly around her.
The two hours in that stuffy lecture hall felt like pure torture. No one scrambled to leave the room faster than Nadia when the bell rang.
"My God, is she always like that?" Georgina asked weakly, gently massaging her temples, which throbbed from the dull teaching. Even the worst accounting lectures at the polytechnic she attended in her previous life had not been this painfully dull.
"Yep, and that’s exactly why she’s my least favorite teacher on this entire campus," Nadia snickered, her lips curving.
Georgina wholeheartedly agreed.
"Anyway, off to Professor Saber’s class. I really need to see his charming face to cure me of this academic trauma."
Georgina perked up, the part of her that loved modern novels waking up. "Professor Saber? Like Reymond Saber?"
Nadia gave her a knowing smirk. "Who else? Come on, let’s go." She grabbed Georgina's wrist and pulled her along, and Georgina followed eagerly. She was curious to see the charming professor known in the books for being dangerously fierce when angered or protective.
As they entered his classroom, a calming wave settled deep into Georgina’s bones. Judging by Nadia’s immediate sigh, she wasn't the only one feeling soothed.
The room was spacious, airy, and stunning. Intricate spiral signs and ancient runes were carved into the stone walls. A pleasant, earthy scent lingered in the air, clearing out the stuffiness from their previous class.
They took seats near the front as other students filled the rows. Unlike the tense hallways, a relaxed chatter filled the room, with everyone feeling completely at ease.
The door opened, and the man they had been waiting for walked in. Every girl in the room sighed softly, Georgina included.
He had dark curls, striking emerald eyes, and a perfectly sculpted face. It was clear that God had taken his time on him. It was no surprise he won the best male lead poll in the novel. He wore gold-rimmed glasses, a vintage chain at his waist, sharp black slacks, a crisp white shirt, and a tailored waistcoat. He looked more like a billionaire tycoon than a university lecturer. With his hidden background, Georgina figured he was likely as wealthy as her prickly new husband, Ester.
"Good morning, class."
"Good morning, Professor Saber," half the class chimed in unison, while the rest responded with normal, respectful greetings.
Reymond sighed with a faint, amused shake of his head as he set his leather bag on the large desk at the front. After looking up, his movements paused momentarily. His sharp green eyes swept across the room and locked onto Georgina's. He tilted his head slightly, narrowing his gaze at her as if sensing something unusual, then smoothly regained his composure as if nothing had happened.
"Okay, class, please turn to page 45. There’s a topic I think you'll all find very interesting."
Books were quickly pulled out, and pages turned eagerly.
"What was that look all about?" Nadia murmured to Georgina from the side.
Georgina shrugged, having no idea why the powerful scholar had paused.
On the blackboard, Reymond wrote in elegant, sweeping cursive: *Soul/Memory Transfer.*
Facing the students, he began his lecture. "When we say soul transfer, it means placing or pulling the soul of a person into the physical body of another. Memory transfer, on the other hand, allows someone to gain access to your personal consciousness."
He leaned slightly against the podium. "Both processes are much more complex and volatile than they seem. To successfully execute a soul transfer, the invading soul must be compatible with the host body it is going to inhabit. For example, for the soul of a vampire to enter a human’s body, there is an energy called gok that has to match at least 85% for them to successfully bind."
The entire classroom fell silent, completely captivated by his smooth voice.
He continued, "The deep, dangerous rituals involved are what make soul transfer deadly and globally banned."
"Why?" a guy with a buzz cut interrupted from the middle row. "It doesn’t seem so dangerous if the math is correct."
Reymond smiled thinly. "Any small mistake or minor miscalculation can instantly set the host body ablaze and send the soul spiraling endlessly through reality."
A collective gasp rippled through the room, and everyone looked shocked.
"Soul transfer is an attempt to trick the very fabric of reality into accepting what shouldn’t be there. If done incorrectly, you will invoke the absolute fury of the universe."
He leaned back against the edge of the desk. "Memory transfer is a lesser evil, though it also carries serious risks. With an exchange of blood and a small piece of one's soul, a person can grant another access to nearly every part of their history. But it is highly discouraged. The person receiving the memory can find themselves unexpectedly submerged in an alien consciousness, experiencing the trauma as if it belonged to them."
Another student raised a hand. "So even if it’s a terrible memory, like an attack, the recipient would feel it too?"
"Exactly."
Georgina's breath caught as her mind flashed to a dark, violent episode she had experienced recently in the bathroom. A cold sweat broke out on her skin. Did those memories belong to the real Darlea?
