*ring* *ring*
Diana, tired from last night's happenings, suddenly woke up because her cellphone was ringing.
'What is it this time?' She thought while rubbing her and grabbing her vibrating phone.
"Hello? Who is this?" Diana yawned after answering the call.
"Good morning, love." A guy with a husky voice replied.
Diana froze when she heard the voice, her heart skipping a beat. That voice.
It was...
"Excuse me?" she said, sitting up straight, her sleepiness vanishing in an instant.
"Did I wake you?" the man asked, his tone calm but with a hint of amusement.
"Who is this?" Diana demanded, her voice sharper now.
There was a soft chuckle on the other end. "It’s Anthony. From last night. I hope you don’t mind me calling."
Her jaw dropped. Anthony? As in King Anthony? She stared at her phone in disbelief, as if it might somehow explain how the king of Yelovia had her number.
"How… how did you get my number?" she stammered, her mind racing.
"I have my ways," he replied smoothly. "Perks of being a king, I suppose."
Diana groaned, running a hand through her messy hair. "Okay, but why are you calling me? Don’t you have, I don’t know, royal duties or something?"
"Plenty," he admitted, his voice carrying a smile. "But I wanted to thank you again for your work yesterday. You handled everything brilliantly."
She blinked, caught off guard by the compliment. "Oh. Well, thank you, Your Majesty. But you didn’t have to call me for that."
"Anthony," he corrected. "And maybe I didn’t have to, but I wanted to."
Diana felt her cheeks heat up. She was grateful he couldn’t see her blushing through the phone. "Okay… Anthony. Is there anything else you needed?"
"Actually, yes," he said, his tone shifting slightly. "I was wondering if you’d join me for coffee later today. Just the two of us."
Her heart stopped. "Coffee? With you?"
"Yes," he said simply, as if it were the most normal thing in the world.
Diana’s mind raced. Was this some kind of joke? Why would a king want to have coffee with her?
"I… I don’t know if that’s a good idea," she said hesitantly.
"Why not?" he asked, his voice soft but persistent.
"Because you’re… you’re you. And I’m just… me," she said, struggling to find the right words.
"Exactly," he said, his tone warm. "You’re you. And that’s why I’m asking."
Diana was silent, her thoughts a whirlwind. This couldn’t be real. Stuff like this didn’t happen in real life.
"Think about it," Anthony said, breaking the silence. "I’ll text you the details. No pressure, of course."
Before she could respond, he added, "Have a good morning, Diana."
And with that, the line went dead, leaving her sitting there, phone in hand, her heart pounding like a drum.
"What just happened?" she whispered to herself, staring at the screen.
Her phone buzzed again, and this time it was a text.
Anthony: Coffee at 3? I’ll send a car.
Diana groaned, flopping back onto her bed. "What have I gotten myself into?" She screamed on her pillow while panicking about what to do next. What should she wear? What should she do? What does one even talk about with a king?
She bolted upright and rushed to her closet, yanking out every piece of clothing she owned. "Too casual. Too formal. Too… weird," she muttered, tossing clothes onto her bed.
After what felt like an eternity, she settled on a simple yet elegant outfit: a white blouse tucked into some long black skirt, paired with kitten heels. It was polished but not over the top.
By the time the car Anthony had sent arrived, Diana was a bundle of nerves. She fidgeted with her bag the entire ride, her heart pounding as they pulled up to a quaint, upscale coffee shop tucked away in a quiet corner of the city.
The driver opened the door for her, and she stepped out, her legs feeling like jelly. She took a deep breath and walked inside, the soft chime of the doorbell announcing her arrival.
And there he was.
Anthony sat at a corner table, dressed in a crisp black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his dark hair slightly tousled. He looked up as she entered, a small smile playing on his lips.
"Diana," he said, standing as she approached. "You made it."
"Hi," she managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper.
He gestured to the seat across from him. "Please, sit."
She slid into the chair, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, but Diana could barely focus on anything other than the man sitting across from her.
"I hope the car wasn’t too much," Anthony said, his tone casual.
"No, it was fine. Thank you," she replied, her voice still shaky.
A waiter appeared, and Anthony ordered for both of them. "Two iced Americanos, please. And a slice of the blueberry cheesecake."
Diana raised an eyebrow. "You’re ordering for me now?"
He chuckled. "I figured I’d take a chance. If you don’t like it, we’ll get you something else."
She couldn’t help but smile, though her nerves were still buzzing. "You’re awfully confident for someone who barely knows me."
"Well," he said, leaning back in his chair, "I’d like to change that."
Her cheeks flushed, and she quickly looked down at the table. "So… why did you ask me here?"
Anthony’s expression softened. "Because I wanted to thank you properly. You went above and beyond yesterday, and I noticed."
Diana blinked, caught off guard. "I was just doing my job." Still in awe at how the king wanted to go all his way just to thank her...
"Maybe," he said, his gaze steady. "But you did it exceptionally well. And… I enjoyed talking to you. At the coffee shop, I mean."
Her heart skipped a beat. "You mean when I thought you were just some random guy?"
He laughed, the sound warm and genuine. "Exactly. It was refreshing, actually. Most people treat me differently when they know who I am."
The waiter returned with their drinks and the cake, and Anthony slid the plate toward her. "Try it. It’s the best in the city."
Diana hesitated before taking a small bite. Her eyes widened. "Okay, you weren’t kidding. This is amazing."
"I told you," he said, his smile widening.
As they sipped their coffee and shared the cake, the conversation flowed more easily. Anthony asked her about her work, her hobbies, and her dreams, listening intently to every word.
Diana found herself relaxing, her initial nerves melting away. He wasn’t just a king; he was kind, funny, and surprisingly down-to-earth.
But as the afternoon wore on, a nagging thought crept into her mind. Why me? Out of all the people he could spend time with, why did he choose me?
As if sensing her unease, Anthony leaned forward, his expression serious. "Diana, I know this might feel… strange. But I meant what I said. You’re different. And I’d like to get to know you better, if you’ll let me."
Her breath caught in her throat. She didn’t know what to say, so she simply nodded, her heart pounding.
As they finished their Americano, Anthony glanced at his watch and sighed. "Unfortunately, duty calls. But I’d like to do this again. Soon?"
Diana smiled, her nerves replaced by a strange, fluttery excitement. "I’d like that too." She said softly because she was shy and nervous at the same time.
'What do you mean the king is asking me to meet him on another coffee date???' She thought while still in awe by it.
He stood and offered her his hand. She hesitated for a moment before taking it, his touch sending a familiar jolt through her.
"Until next time, Diana," he said, his voice soft but so manly it made Diana's knees weak.
As he walked out of the coffee shop, leaving her sitting there with an empty cup and a racing heart, Diana couldn’t help but wonder if her life was about to change forever.
