Chapter 4: Family Matters

1091 Words
Diana sighed as she stared out the car window, the familiar sights of her hometown, Chistlewood, rolling by. It had been months since her last visit, and while she loved her family, these trips always came with a side of unsolicited advice and a lot of judgment. Her phone buzzed on the seat beside her. A text from her elder sister, Cristiana. Cristiana: Mom’s already talking about Jameson. Brace yourself. Diana groaned, typing back a quick reply. Diana: Of course she is. Can’t wait. She rolled her eyes while prepping herself for all the words of wisdom her mother would talk throughout this weekend. The car she's riding pulled up to her parents’ sprawling suburban home, a picture-perfect house with a manicured lawn and a white picket fence. It was the kind of place that screamed stability and tradition, the two things Diana had been quietly rebelling against her entire life. As she stepped out of the car, the front door swung open, and her younger brother, Timothy, went out to greet her. "Diana!" he called, pulling her into a bear hug. "You’re late. Mom’s been walking back and forth for the last hour." "Of course she has," Diana muttered, rolling her eyes. "It’s not like I’m the guest of honor. That’s Dad, it's his birthday." "True, but you know how she gets," Timothy said with a grin. "Come on, everyone’s inside." The house was bustling with activity. Her mother was in the kitchen, barking orders at the staff, while her father sat in his favorite armchair, laughing at something Cristiana’s husband, Troy, had said. Cristiana was perched on the arm of the chair, looking every bit the perfect eldest daughter, while Timothy’s fiancée, Gianna, was helping set the table with her usual grace and charm. "Diana, darling!" her mother exclaimed, rushing over to pull her into a tight hug. "You’re finally here. We were starting to think you’d forgotten about us." "Hi, Mom," Diana said, forcing a smile. "I wouldn’t miss Dad’s birthday." "Good," her mother said, stepping back to look her over. "You look… tired. Are you eating enough? And what are you wearing? You should’ve dressed up a little. Jameson and his parents are joining us for dinner, you know." Diana’s stomach sank. "Jameson? Why?" Her mother gave her a pointed look. "Because it’s time you started thinking about your future, Diana. You’re not getting any younger, and Jameson is a wonderful match. His family is practically part of ours." "Mom," Diana said, her voice tight, "We’ve been over this. I’m not interested in Jameson. And he's definitely not interested with me." She softly whispered the last part. "Nonsense," her mother said, waving her off. "You two have always been close. It’s only natural." Before Diana could argue further, the doorbell rang, and her mother clapped her hands. "That must be the Hendersons! Diana, be a dear and help me greet them." Reluctantly, Diana followed her mother to the door, where the Hendersons stood, all smiles. Jameson was in the middle, looking as polished and charming as ever in a tailored suit. "Diana," he said, pulling her into a friendly hug. "It’s good to see you." "You too, Jameson," she said, her voice lacking enthusiasm. As the families gathered around the dining table, the conversation flowed easily. Her father and Mr. Henderson reminisced about their college days, while her mother and Mrs. Henderson exchanged updates about mutual friends. Cristiana and Troy shared stories from the hospital, and Timothy and Gianna talked about their upcoming wedding. Diana, meanwhile, picked at her food, trying to avoid her mother’s pointed glances. "So, Diana," Mrs. Henderson said, turning to her with a warm smile. "How’s work? Your mother tells me you’ve been very busy." "Work’s good," Diana said, forcing a polite smile. "It keeps me on my toes." "That’s wonderful," Mrs. Henderson said. "But don’t you think it’s time to start focusing on other things? Like settling down?" Diana opened her mouth to respond, but her mother jumped in. "Exactly! Jameson is doing so well with the family business, and he’s such a gentleman. The two of you would make a perfect pair." Jameson cleared his throat, looking uncomfortable. "Mom, I think Diana’s perfectly capable of deciding what’s best for her." "Of course she is," Mrs. Henderson said, though her tone suggested otherwise. Diana shot Jameson a grateful look, and he gave her a small, knowing smile. After dinner, the two of them found themselves alone on the back patio, the cool evening air a welcome relief from the stifling atmosphere inside. "Sorry about all that," Jameson said, leaning against the railing. "They mean well, but… you know how they are." "Tell me about it," Diana said, crossing her arms. "I don’t know how you put up with it." Jameson chuckled. "It’s easier when you’re not the one they’re trying to marry off." Diana laughed, the tension in her chest easing slightly. "Fair point." They stood in comfortable silence for a moment before Jameson spoke again, his tone more serious. "You know I’d never go through with it, right? Marrying you, I mean." Diana looked at him, surprised. "Really?" He nodded. "You’re my best friend, Diana. And I care about you too much to trap you in something like that. Besides…" He hesitated, glancing away. "There’s someone else. Not that my parents know." Diana’s eyes widened as the pieces clicked into place. "Jameson… are you???" He nodded, a small, nervous smile on his face. "Yeah. I am." Diana reached out and squeezed his hand. "Thank you for telling me. And don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me." "Thanks," he said, his shoulders relaxing. "And for what it’s worth, I’ll always have your back. Even if our parents don’t get it." "Same here," Diana said, smiling. As they headed back inside, Diana felt a renewed sense of determination. Her family might not understand her choices, but she wasn’t going to let them dictate her life. - END OF CHAPTER 4 - Hi, lovely readers! Family drama, anyone?
