AAMNA POV'S
I held Emma tight, pulling him along, but a car suddenly stopped beside us. Emma struggled to break free, but I gripped his hand firmly. A tall man in his late thirties, with a brown complexion and casual attire, stepped out of the car.
"You?" he said, pointing and walking towards us.
Emma quickly hid behind me. "Come here," I pulled him forward. "If you're afraid, then you shouldn't steal. Face him and apologize."
But Emma bit me instead, and I jerked in pain, releasing his hand. He ran off, and the man chased after him. I examined my hand, wincing in pain. The man returned, looking worried.
"Are you okay?" he asked, trying to check my hand. I moved back quickly, and he explained, "Sorry, I'm a doctor. I just want to check. If you don't believe me, you can check my wallet."
"Thanks, I think I'm fine. Here," I said, handing him his wallet back. He took it and put it in his pocket. "Check it before putting it inside," I suggested.
He mouthed an 'oh' and he checked the wallet.
"It's complete," he said with a smile. "If you're coming here, watch out for Emma and other boys, and don't leave your things lying around," I advised.
"Thanks, this is my first time coming here," He replied. As I turned to leave, he asked, "Do you live here?" I turned back to him.
"Nope, I came to visit my friend for her birthday today." My phone rang, and I pulled it out to answer. "Don't f*****g scold me like that, Where are you?" I asked looking ahead. "Okay, just come straight. You'll see a gray Ford Jeep, yeah?" After hanging up, I turned to him again.
"Sorry to disturb you, where do you live?" He smile and asked, I frown at his questions. One thing with me I have trust issues most especially with strangers. "No, I just want to know you. No one would do what you did. And if I drop by your area, I'll gladly say I know someone here." He flashed me his straight white teeth, I sigh node at him.
"Kabuwa police Barack" I answer, and bobo car came into view until he stop next to the Ford jeep.
Hanifah scolded from inside, "A.Y, how could you just step out like that without telling us?" here comes my second mean mother, I shrugged it off.
"I just wanted to take some fresh air."
She shot back, "f**k you and your f*****g fresh air." I smirked,
"You wish."
"I'd be glad," she said with a smile, "but too bad I have..." Before she could finish, I interrupted, "Hani, goodness, that's gross. Bobo shut your girl up or I'll shut it off."
"She's your match," I rolled my eyes.
David got out of the car and asked, "Who is this?"
I explained, "I just helped him from Emma."
Bobo chimed in, "That kid will get himself into trouble he won't be able to solve."
The man thanked me, "Thanks to her, I got my wallet back." Before he could say more, I cut in,
"You're welcome. I have to go." As I was about to get into the car, he asked,
"Can I have your name, miss?"
Hanifah blurted out, "Aamna or A.Y."
"Hani you can't just tell a stranger my name, gosh i miss zee," bobo and david burst into laughter as they drove off.
It's Monday again, and I'm back in university for my second week. I'm currently in class with Jalilah, waiting for our rather Mr arrogant professor.
"Aamna, he's not arrogant; you two just met in an inappropriate way, and his coldness has reasons," Jalilah said, trying to defend him. I rolled my eyes as she failed for the umpteenth time in the driving game on my phone.
"You suck at this, Jalilah," I teased.
"I know, but all your games are complicated," she replied.
"They're not complicated; you just don't know how to drive," I shot back.
"This is just a game," she said, trying to downplay it.
"Have you watched that movie where the man landed the plane using just his gaming skills? He imagined it and applied it in real life, saving everyone," I said, grinning.
Jalilah handed my phone back to me, chuckling, "A.Y, that's just a movie. Which will never happen."
"Well, it works," I said, putting on my headphones and starting to listen to Eminem's 'Not Afraid.' The lyrics resonated with me:
"I'm not afraid / To take a stand / Everybody / Come take my hand / We'll walk this road together, through the storm..." Just as I was getting into the song, someone pulled my headphones down.
"A.Y," Jalilah called out, and I looked at her and she pointed at the board, I turn to the board, where our professor, Mr. Adeel, was standing. He frowned, and I put my headphones away.
Mr. Adeel began to walk around the room before starting the class.
"Good morning, class," he said.
"Morning, Mr. Adeel," we replied in unison.
"Before we start, I gave you an assignment on the first day we met, right?"
"Yes, sir," we chorused.
"Good. A few of you did fairly well, some passed, but there's one particular person who got the highest marks, which amazed me." He walked back to his laptop and checked the results. "Who is Aamna Yusuf?" he asked, calling out my name. I hesitated, knowing he wouldn't be pleased about this. Jalilah nudged me, encouraging me to respond.
