The Queen’s Trap

1153 Words
The invitation wasn’t meant for me. I knew it the moment I overheard two girls whispering about Clarissa’s party in the bathroom. Their eyes had flicked toward me, their laughter sharp and cruel. “She’ll never dare show her face.” “Clarissa will destroy her if she does.” It wasn’t just a party. It was a trap. And yet, when Saturday night came, Adrian appeared at my door, leaning against the frame like he owned the house—and me. “Get ready,” he said simply. I shook my head. “I’m not going. She hates me. She’ll make a scene.” “That’s her problem.” His eyes burned into mine, steady and unyielding. “Not yours.” “I don’t want to be part of this war,” I whispered. A slow smirk curved his lips. “Too late, stepsis. You already are.” --- Clarissa’s house was even bigger than the last mansion. Chandeliers glowed from the ceiling, light bouncing off golden frames and polished marble. Music thumped from hidden speakers, echoing through wide halls packed with students. Every eye turned when Adrian walked in. And then, when they saw me at his side, the whispers began. “She actually came?” “She’s braver than I thought.” “Or stupider.” I kept my chin high, though my stomach twisted. Adrian’s hand brushed mine, not quite holding, but close enough to remind me he was there. Clarissa appeared on the staircase, dressed in blood-red silk that shimmered under the light. Her smile was sharp enough to cut glass. “Well, well,” she purred, her voice carrying over the crowd. “Look who decided to join us.” The room stilled. All attention shifted to me. Exactly as she wanted. --- For the first hour, nothing happened. Students danced, drank, and laughed, though I could feel the undercurrent of tension wherever I went. Clarissa’s eyes followed me, her friends whispering and smirking whenever I passed. Adrian stayed close, his hand occasionally brushing my back or shoulder, a silent claim that only fueled the gossip. But then came the game. “Truth or Dare!” someone shouted, and the crowd cheered. I froze. Clarissa’s gaze locked on me across the circle forming on the floor. Her smirk widened as she patted the seat beside her, as if daring me to refuse. Adrian’s hand tightened around mine. “We’re leaving,” he said under his breath. But if we left, Clarissa would win. She would prove I was weak, a coward hiding behind Adrian’s shadow. “No,” I whispered, surprising even myself. “I’ll play.” Adrian’s eyes snapped to me, sharp with warning. But I slipped free from his grasp and sat down. --- The game began harmlessly enough—embarrassing confessions, silly dares. Laughter filled the room, though my heart pounded with every spin of the bottle. And then, inevitably, it landed on me. Clarissa’s smile was sweet poison. “Truth or dare?” I swallowed hard. “Truth.” Her eyes glittered. “Do you want Adrian?” The room gasped. My face burned, words caught in my throat. Before I could answer, Adrian’s voice cut through the noise like a blade. “Enough.” But Clarissa only leaned closer, her voice dropping to a whisper that carried anyway. “Or maybe you already have him?” Laughter rippled through the circle. My hands shook in my lap. “I—” “Dare.” Adrian’s voice was steel. “She picks dare.” Gasps erupted, the crowd electric with anticipation. Clarissa’s smile sharpened. “Very well. I dare you to kiss him. Right here. In front of everyone.” The room exploded. --- My heart stopped. Kiss him? Here? In front of all of them? I shook my head, panic clawing at my chest. “No, I can’t—” Clarissa’s laughter rang out, cruel and triumphant. “See? She’s nothing but a coward. Adrian, really, you can do better—” But before she could finish, Adrian moved. In one swift motion, he pulled me into his arms, his hand tilting my chin up, and pressed his lips to mine. The world vanished. Heat flooded through me, overwhelming, unstoppable. That invisible thread between us snapped tight, pulling me deeper, harder. My pulse raced, my skin tingled, my very soul trembled with recognition. The mate bond roared to life. Gasps, shouts, laughter—all of it faded as the kiss deepened. His hand slid to the small of my back, holding me against him as though he’d never let go. When he finally pulled back, my lips tingled, my breath shaky, my entire body trembling. And the room… was chaos. --- “She kissed him!” “No—he kissed her!” “They’re… mates?” The whispers spread like wildfire. Clarissa’s face twisted, her perfect mask cracking. Fury burned in her eyes as she rose to her feet, trembling with rage. “This isn’t over,” she hissed, her voice trembling. “You’ll regret this.” Adrian’s arm tightened around me, pulling me closer to his side. His gaze swept over the crowd, dark and feral. “Let anyone touch her,” he said, voice low and dangerous, “and they’ll answer to me.” The threat hung heavy in the air, silencing even the boldest whispers. Clarissa stormed out, her friends trailing behind her. But the damage was done. The academy would be buzzing with rumors by morning. And me? I stood in Adrian’s arms, heart racing, lips still burning from his kiss, knowing nothing would ever be the same again. --- That night, when we finally left the party, silence filled the car. I stared out the window, my mind spinning, my chest aching with too many emotions at once. Finally, I whispered, “Why did you do that?” Adrian’s hand tightened on the wheel. “Because I don’t share.” I turned to him, anger and fear warring inside me. “You humiliated me. You trapped me—” “I protected you,” he interrupted sharply. “They were going to tear you apart. I couldn’t let that happen.” My throat tightened. I wanted to hate him for it. But the memory of his lips on mine, the bond roaring through me, made it impossible. “You don’t get to decide for me,” I whispered. His eyes flicked to me, dark and unreadable. “Wrong,” he said softly, almost like a vow. “The bond already decided.” And in the silence that followed, I knew he was right. --- [To those who doesn't understand] Chapter Five Highlights: Clarissa sets a public trap at the party.
