Chapter 3. The Encounter

3578 Words
Kibin woke up early, feeling a sense of urgency and determination. The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a golden glow over the horizon. He decided to head to the beach to savor the cool, refreshing sea breeze, hoping it would clear his mind and inspire him. As he closed his eyes and tried to focus on coming up with a good storyline and plot for his new story, his mind remained stubbornly blank. The sound of the waves and the scent of the salty air usually calmed him, but today, his thoughts were scattered. Not far from where he stood, he noticed a motorboat docking at the shore. His curiosity piqued, and his stomach rumbling, he walked over to buy some fish. The fishermen were just unloading their catch, and Kibin watched as the fish glistened in the early morning light. After purchasing a kilo, he decided to visit Aling Fe to give her some of the fresh fish. "Hello, Aling Fe! Are you home?" Kibin called out as he knocked on the door of the small hut. The door creaked open, revealing Aling Fe's kind and weathered face. "Good morning, Aling Fe!" Kibin greeted her with a warm smile. "Good morning to you, young man. What brings you here?" Aling Fe asked, her eyes twinkling with curiosity. "I wanted to have an amulet made. And I brought something for you," Kibin said, handing over the bag of fish. "You shouldn't have bothered, young man," the old woman said, touched by his gesture. "It's no trouble at all, Lola. Don't worry about it. I saw the boat docking and thought I'd buy some. I love this kind of fish, especially when it's fried, so I thought I'd get some for you too," Kibin said cheerfully. Aling Fe smiled and motioned for Kibin to enter. "Thank you, Kibin. Please, come in. I'll put these in the kitchen." Kibin entered the small, cozy house and headed to the kitchen, noticing how cramped it was, especially for someone as tall as he was. He carefully navigated the space, trying not to bump into anything. "I haven't made the amulet yet. I'll give it to you this afternoon. But first, I need to know your birthdate to determine the kind of amulet you need," the old woman said. "I was born on December 15, 1994. I'll be turning twenty this December. You know, Lola, my mom told me I was born special. When I was born, they thought I was dead because I wasn't breathing, moving, or crying. But they saw these glowing white dust particles spread over my body, and after that, I came to life and started crying. The doctor said it was a miracle I survived," Kibin recounted. After hearing Kibin's story, Aling Fe's eyes widened. "It is indeed a miracle. Such stories are rare, but they carry great significance. There may be more to your birth than you realize." "Alright, I will bring the amulet to you later," Aling Fe said, her voice filled with a newfound sense of purpose. "Okay, Lola. I'll take my leave now," Kibin said, standing up from his seat. As he was leaving the hut, his eyes caught sight of a necklace hanging on the wall. It shimmered subtly in the dim light of the room. Aling Fe noticed his gaze and was surprised to see the necklace glowing faintly. Kibin, however, didn't see the glow as he was already walking out of the door. After he left, Aling Fe took the necklace, which belonged to Minerva, and wondered why it had started glowing. This necklace had only ever glowed when Minerva wore it. Aling Fe remembered Minerva's death, a painful memory for her. Minerva had died on December 19, 1954. Twenty years ago, Aling Fe had also seen the necklace glow despite Minerva no longer being around. At that time, Aling Fe had looked up at the sky and seen glowing white dust in the direction of the mystical forest, appearing and disappearing just as quickly. As she recalled these memories, Aling Fe couldn't help but wonder if there was a connection to Kibin. From the moment she first saw Kibin, he had reminded her of her sister. His kindness, friendliness, and constant smile were so much like Minerva's. Aling Fe couldn't tell if Kibin's arrival was mere coincidence or destiny, but one thing she was sure of was that Kibin was in danger and seemed to attract negative elements. Determined to find inspiration for his writing, Kibin decided to venture into the forest. Armed with his hiking bag, notebook, and pen, he set out for the forest at 2:00 PM. The forest was a place of mystery and magic, and Kibin hoped it would provide him with the inspiration he so desperately needed. The air was cool and filled with the earthy scent of moss and leaves. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. As Kibin walked deeper into the forest, an eerie sensation crept up his spine, as if unseen eyes were watching his every move. He stopped, turning to glance behind him, but the path was empty. The dense foliage to his right and left revealed nothing but trees and shadows. Kibin shook off the unsettling feeling and resumed his walk, though his pace quickened. He couldn't shake the sense of dread that seemed to rise from the very ground beneath him. Turning once more, he still saw nothing. The silence of the forest was oppressive. His breath quickened, and he could feel his heart pounding in his chest. He pulled out his cellphone, his fingers trembling as he opened the camera app. Slowly, he raised the screen to look behind him. There it was. A shadowy figure rose from the ground, its glowing red eyes piercing the darkness. The creature's form shifted and undulated, difficult to define, as if made from the very essence of the night. It moved with a terrifying grace, and tendrils of darkness followed it like smoke. Kibin's breath caught in his throat as the creature turned its gaze directly at him, opening its mouth to emit a bone-chilling sound. Fear surged through Kibin, and he turned and ran, his footsteps echoing in the stillness of the forest. But the creature moved faster, flying towards him and merging into his body. Kibin stumbled and stopped, his head hanging low. Moments later, he began to lift his head slowly, as if struggling against an invisible force, his arms hanging limply by his sides. When he finally looked up, his face was transformed. His expression was one of anger, and his eyes were blood-red and glaring. The shadowy creature was trying to possess and control his body. Meanwhile, inside a rustic hut, Kentaro was diligently polishing the Sword of Light. Suddenly, he sensed a dark presence approaching the forest. The air felt charged with a sinister energy. Kentaro quickly strapped on the sword and transformed into his warrior form, ready to confront the intruder. Rushing out of the hut, he encountered the possessed Kibin and immediately recognized the dark force-the Shadow Spirit. The shadow spirit, born from the remnants of dark magic and cursed energies that once plagued the land, had always sought to plunge the forest into eternal darkness. This spirit could manipulate shadows, create terrifying illusions, and travel instantaneously from one shadow to another. His mere presence instilled overwhelming fear and despair, making even the bravest hearts falter. Before the shadow spirit could fully control Kibin's body, Kentaro threw blue powder at him. The powder forced the shadow spirit out of Kibin, who collapsed unconscious as the dark smoke emerged from his body. Under the ethereal glow of the full moon, the shadow spirit materialized from the smoky darkness, his red eyes glowing with malice. Yamato sensed the dark presence. The air was thick with tension as the two adversaries faced each other. "Shadow spirit, your reign of darkness ends here," Yamato declared, his voice unwavering. The shadow spirit's laughter echoed ominously through the trees. "You think you can defeat me, guardian? This forest belongs to the shadows, and I will reclaim it." The air was electric as Yamato and the shadow spirit stood under the moonlight, the forest holding its breath. Shadow Spirit's red eyes glowed with malevolent intent, while Yamato's golden eyes burned with determination. "You will never claim this forest, shadow spirit," Yamato proclaimed, his voice resolute. The shadow spirit's laughter was dark and haunting, reverberating through the trees. "This forest belongs to the shadows. You are but a fleeting light, soon to be snuffed out." With a swift movement, the shadow spirit summoned tendrils of darkness that snaked across the ground, aiming to ensnare Yamato. Anticipating the attack, Yamato leaped into the air, his white tails fanning out behind him. He drew his sword, which glowed with radiant light, slicing through the dark tendrils with ease. The shadow spirit narrowed his eyes, watching as the severed tendrils dissolved into shadows. "Impressive, but you cannot escape the darkness," he hissed, his form shifting and blending into the surrounding shadows. Yamato landed gracefully, his senses on high alert. The shadows around him seemed to come alive, swirling and shifting. He knew that the enemy could strike from any direction. Suddenly, a shadowy figure lunged at him from his left. Yamato's reflexes were lightning-fast, and he parried the attack with his sword, the clash of light and dark energy sending sparks flying. The shadow spirit's form materialized, his red eyes glowing with anger. "You fight well, guardian, but this battle is far from over." With a wave of his hand, the shadow spirit summoned a dark vortex, attempting to engulf Yamato. The winds howled as the vortex grew in size and intensity. Yamato planted his feet firmly on the ground, his sword held high. Channeling the power of light within him, he unleashed a brilliant beam of energy that collided with the vortex, pushing it back. "Your darkness is no match for the light of this forest!" Yamato shouted, his voice echoing with unwavering resolve. The force of the light beam began to overpower the vortex, causing it to dissipate. The shadow spirit staggered back, his form flickering. Enraged, he summoned a wave of dark energy, sending it crashing towards Yamato. The impact sent Yamato sprawling to the ground, pain radiating through his body. For a moment, he struggled to get up, the weight of enemy's power bearing down on him. "Give up, Yamato. You cannot win," the enemy taunted, advancing slowly. But Yamato's spirit was unyielding. He gritted his teeth and rose to his feet, his golden eyes blazing with determination. "I will never give up. This forest and its inhabitants depend on me." Summoning all his strength, Yamato raised his sword, channeling the essence of the forest into its blade. The sword glowed brighter than ever before, illuminating the entire forest. With a powerful s***h, he sent a wave of light energy surging towards the shadow spirit. The shadow spirit tried to shield himself, but the force of the light was too strong. The wave of light energy engulfed him, and he let out a piercing scream as the darkness within him was purged. His form began to dissolve, the shadows dissipating into thin air. "No! This cannot be!" the shadow spirit's voice echoed one last time before he was completely consumed by the light. As the darkness lifted, the forest seemed to come alive with a renewed sense of peace and tranquility. The air was filled with the soft chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves. Yamato stood victorious, his sword still glowing with the power of the forest. Kibin, lying down at the edge of the clearing, silently observed the scene. He had just witnessed a battle he never thought possible, a clash between two supernatural beings. With the shadow spirit defeated, Yamato approached Kibin. Afraid, Kibin pretended to be unconscious, hoping the demon fox wouldn't harm him. Yamato gently lifted Kibin into his arms. As he did so, Kibin rested his head against Yamato's chest. He could feel Yamato floating and the cool breeze against his skin. Kibin also heard the steady beat of Yamato's heart, which sounded just like a normal human's heartbeat. He realized that the fox demon wasn't evil or a threat, but a kind protector of the mystical forest. Curiosity got the better of Kibin, and he opened his eyes slightly, wanting to see the true face of the demon fox. Due to Yamato's long hair, the demon fox didn't notice Kibin's partially open eyes. In the moonlight, Kibin saw Yamato's face-his long, white hair, white ears, and soft tails. Yamato's warrior form was half-human, half-fox, with a smooth, white face, sharp nose, and handsome features. Contrary to the fearful tales, the demon fox wasn't monstrous or terrifying but a noble and handsome being. Feeling warmth spread through his face, Kibin blushed and smiled. Yamato noticed Kibin's smile and looked at him, causing Kibin to quickly close his eyes and pretend to be unconscious again. Upon reaching the village, Yamato gently placed Kibin on a waiting shed by the roadside and then departed swiftly. After a few moments, Kibin stood up and walked back to his house, the image of his savior etched in his mind. The night was still and quiet in the small village. Kibin lay in his bed, his mind drifting back to the events of the day. The room was dark, except for the slivers of moonlight seeping through the window. The only sounds were the distant chirping of crickets and the occasional rustle of leaves. Kibin closed his eyes, trying to calm his thoughts, but the memories of the forest kept resurfacing. As he slowly drifted off to sleep, the shadows in his room seemed to grow longer, reaching out to him. Kibin found himself back in the heart of the mystical forest. The air was thick with fog, and the only sounds were the eerie whispers of the wind through the trees. The towering trees loomed over him, their twisted branches resembling the gnarled hands of old crones. He felt a chill run down his spine as he walked deeper into the forest, the memory of the shadow spirit still fresh in his mind. Suddenly, the ground beneath him seemed to come alive with a dark, malevolent energy. The shadows coalesced into a familiar, terrifying form-the shadow spirit, with his glowing red eyes and shifting, smoky tendrils. The air grew cold, and Kibin felt a deep sense of dread. "You cannot escape me, Kibin," the shadow spirit hissed, his voice echoing through the trees. "You will always be mine." Kibin's heart pounded in his chest as he tried to run, but his legs felt like lead. Every step was a struggle, and the shadows seemed to close in around him. He could hear his own heartbeat, loud and frantic, as he stumbled through the forest. The shadow spirit's laughter echoed in his ears, filling him with a paralyzing fear. Desperate, Kibin reached for his cellphone, hoping to use its light to dispel the darkness. But when he turned it on, the screen was shattered, and the light flickered weakly before going out. The shadow spirit loomed closer, his tendrils wrapping around Kibin, squeezing the breath from his lungs. "No! Get away from me!" Kibin screamed, his voice barely more than a whisper in the oppressive darkness. He felt his strength waning, the cold tendrils tightening around him. Just as the shadow spirit was about to envelop him completely, he sat up in bed, his heart pounding and his breath coming in rapid gasps. The room was dark and silent, but the fear lingered. Kibin's body was drenched in sweat, and he felt a deep, bone-chilling cold. He clutched his chest, trying to steady his breathing. "It's just a dream. It's just a dream," he whispered to himself, but the memory of the shadow spirit's presence felt all too real. His hands trembled as he reached for the glass of water on his bedside table, taking small sips to calm himself. Kibin looked around his room, the shadows still seeming to dance at the edges of his vision. He got out of bed and lighted up the room, his mind racing. The encounter with the shadow spirit had left a lasting impression, and he couldn't shake the feeling that the darkness was still watching him. The room felt stifling, the air thick with the remnants of his nightmare. After a few minutes, Kibin walked to the window and opened it, letting the cool night air wash over him. He took several deep breaths, trying to calm his racing heart. The village was peaceful, the stars twinkling in the clear night sky. The serene scene helped to ground him, reminding him that he was safe. He listened to the distant sounds of the night, finding solace in their familiarity. Kibin knew that he needed to confront his fears, but the nightmare had shown him just how deep they ran. He decided to visit Aling Fe the next day, hoping that she could help him find peace and understanding. The sun had just risen over the peaceful village, casting a warm golden glow over the thatched roofs and narrow pathways. The gentle sound of waves crashing against the shore added a rhythmic serenity to the morning. Kibin, determined to find solace after his harrowing nightmare, made his way to Aling Fe's humble abode by the sea. His steps were brisk, driven by the hope of protection and understanding. As he approached the small, weathered hut nestled near the water's edge, Kibin could see the ocean stretching out behind it, the waves glistening in the early light. He knocked on the wooden door, the sound echoing slightly in the quiet morning. "Aling Fe, are you home?" Kibin called out, his voice tinged with both anxiety and anticipation. The door creaked open, revealing the kind, wrinkled face of Aling Fe. Her eyes, though aged, held a warmth that immediately put Kibin at ease. "Good morning, Kibin. Come in, come in," she said, stepping aside to let him enter. Kibin stepped into the cozy hut, the familiar scent of herbs and dried flowers filling his nostrils. The interior was modest but filled with an array of fascinating items-jars of potions, bundles of dried plants, and various amulets hanging from the walls. The sound of the waves could still be heard, providing a soothing backdrop. "Sit down, child. You look troubled," Aling Fe observed, her voice gentle as she gestured to a wooden chair by the table. Kibin sat down, taking a deep breath before speaking. "Aling Fe, I came to ask for an amulet to protect me from bad elements. After what happened in the forest... I keep having these nightmares. I need something to keep me safe." Aling Fe's expression turned serious. "Nightmares, you say? Tell me, Kibin, what exactly happened that night?" Kibin hesitated for a moment, then decided to tell her the truth. "I went into the forest, looking for inspiration. While I was there, I encountered a shadowy figure-a spirit with glowing red eyes. It tried to possess me, but then... a demon fox appeared and saved me." Aling Fe's eyes widened in shock. "You went into the forest alone? And a demon fox saved you?" she repeated, her voice a mix of astonishment and concern. "Yes," Kibin confirmed, his voice trembling slightly. "The fox fought the shadow spirit and protected me. But ever since then, I've been having nightmares. I feel like the darkness is still with me." Aling Fe took a moment to absorb Kibin's words, her brows furrowing in thought. "Kibin, you have faced great danger. The shadow spirit's presence is not easily forgotten. But the demon fox you speak of is no ordinary creature. He is Yamato, the guardian of our forest." Kibin looked at her with a mixture of curiosity and relief. "Yamato... So he really is a protector." Aling Fe nodded. "Yes, and you are fortunate to have encountered him. Now, we must ensure that you are safe from further harm." She turned to her collection of amulets, her fingers brushing over the various charms. As she considered her options, her eyes fell upon a necklace hanging on the wall-a necklace with a blue stone pendant that glowed faintly. Aling Fe hesitated for a moment, memories flooding back, but then she made her decision. "Kibin, I had intended to give you an amulet," she began, taking the necklace from the wall, "but I believe this will serve you better." She held out the necklace to him, the blue stone shimmering softly in the light. Kibin looked at the necklace, his eyes widening in surprise. "Are you sure, Aling Fe? This looks very special." Aling Fe smiled gently. "It is special. This necklace carries the protection and strength of the guardians who came before Yamato. It will keep you safe." Kibin gently took the necklace, feeling the cool, smooth surface of the pendant. He could sense a comforting energy emanating from it. "Thank you, Aling Fe. I promise to take good care of it." As he left Aling Fe's hut, the necklace resting against his chest, he felt a newfound sense of courage. The morning sun shone brightly, and the village seemed even more peaceful than before.
