*Morgan Evans*
I couldn’t sleep.
My mind was still buzzing with the memory of that hunky as hell Shifter that had walked in on Allie and me dancing in her basement suite. He was the literal incarnation of my every naughty and romantic fantasy. A walking pile of beefed up muscle, carefree good looks and a smile that had me shivering with heated need. His slightly long wavy black hair looked so very fun to mess with and had me wondering how good he would look if I was to ruffle it with my fingers. His ringed eyes, those smoldering orbs of sage green and ruby red kick started my flirty interest, especially when I caught him looking me over like I had done him.
Finding out that this walking talking s*x on a stick was related to my bestie was a bit of a shock for me.
Allie talked about her older cousins here and there, so I knew that she had older male cousins that were Shifters. I also knew that these cousins are the ones responsible for the incredible change that has happened in our fair city. Said changes that came with having a Village of our own was almost instant and amazing. And the safety and security it provided every Demon living here was felt for months after the walls were built.
Still, if I had known that one of Allies' cousins was THIS drop-dead sexy, I would’ve introduced myself much, much sooner.
I’m not a prude in any sense of the word. And I’m also not a slut that goes around offering my prized velvet pouch to any man that smiles at me. But I am a living, breathing, grown ass woman with needs and am self aware enough to know how to pick, choose and decide on whether a man gets lucky enough to share the warmth of my bed. And that Shifter? That mouthwatering man that instantly sent butterflies bursting in my tummy and heated my skin with nothing but his eyes… Yes, he can definitely get lucky.
I sighed, staring up into the darkness of the spare bedroom I always sleep in when I stayed over in Allie’s basement suite. Allie’s words spun through my head again, reminding me that nothing more than flirting was ever going to happen with that hunk.
“Why’ve you been hiding him from me?” I accused, playfully glaring at Allie after the man in question had finally left the basement.
She laughed and shook her head, pouring us a bowl of popcorn for the next movie we planned to watch.
“I didn’t hide anything.” She clarified, still smiling. “Wren and his older brother Atlas have been out of the city for a while, trying to make connections for the Village to grow.”
I nodded along, feeling a little pouty that I wouldn’t have had the chance to meet the hunky wolf man sooner.
“You were still holding out on me.” I pressed, popping a few popcorn bits into my mouth as we moved together towards the couch.
“Don’t go there, Mo.” She chided, plopping down onto the soft suede next to me. “If you’d have met him earlier, I would’ve encouraged it and maybe even planned a date or two for you.” She shook her head and sighed, her smile turning a bit wistful and hopeful. “But not now.” She pinned me with a much more serious stare, though her smile never wavered. “Wren’s stopped having hook-ups and things like that a little while ago. He’s been a bit more selective about the women he tries to date because he’s looking for his Match.”
I blinked rapidly in stunned silence, flopping back onto the backrest of the couch. Then, once it fully hit me, I frowned and sighed deeply, feeling a little disappointed.
A Match is something that all Demons look for and is the closest thing to a Soulmate that exists in their world. Nowadays, being stuck here in our very Human world, most Demons never find one and choose to find someone special the old fashioned way. So, if Wren, the sexy wolf man that has yet to leave my head, is currently looking for his Match, then I’m s**t-outta luck.
Allie continued, giggling at my clear pout.
“Apparently, his older brother Atlas has been dating a Sorceress who was able to give him a hint that’s supposed to lead him to his Match.” She laughed some more, pausing to munch on our shared snack. “But the poor man has had no luck so far. And he’s told my mom and dad that he’s feeling very frustrated and confused about the hint too.” She leaned back onto the backrest and rolled her head towards me, shimmying her shoulders a little as the intro credits to our movie started up. “If he’s up for it and feeling as frustrated as I think he is, then I might push him your way. But don’t get your hopes up. Nothing more than a hookup is all you’ll get, and that’s if he’s willing to give in.” She turned away, still smiling but focusing on the movie. “He’s been pretty adamant about wanting to find her and his Inner wolf is pushing him to keep looking too.”
I nodded, though she wasn’t looking at me and turned to face the movie as well.
But I couldn’t pay attention.
My head was still reeling over the man that was a literal incarnation of my every wet dream and dirty fantasy. It made sleeping much more difficult. Especially when my half asleep mind was now conjuring up some very… heated thoughts and ideas.
“Stop it, Morgan.” I hissed to myself, pressing the palms of my hands into my eyes.
I groaned in frustration as my mind painted even more detailed pictures, throwing them at me and inciting a fire in places that shouldn’t be this damned hot. Not when I was in the guest room of my friend's suite. And not when said friend and her boyfriend's bedroom was just a few feet from my own room. Or when both of them are Demons with heightened senses that would pick up on any sound or noise I made.
Groaning some more, I got up and rolled out of the comfy bed, moving quietly towards the door. I opened it as softly as possible and moved out of the room, needing some fresh air.
I used the back exit that is almost never used, opening the door to a set of concrete steps that climbed up and out onto the side yard. I climbed the steps barefoot, smiling a little as the cold and rough ground helped me push those naughty thoughts out of my head. I then sat on the top most step and tilted my face up to the stars, smiling at the cool breeze that blew past me.
The night was calm and peaceful, with the distant rustling of leaves helping to calm my heated mind.
After a few seconds of staring up at the twinkling stars, I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath, simply enjoying the peace. But as I sat there, feeling the tickle of my hair as it whipped into my face with the help of the wind, I felt the heavy presence of someone's eyes on me. I had felt that slight weight press onto my back while I was dancing with Allie earlier, though I had thought that the person watching us was Allie’s mother or someone else in her family.
Right now, though, as I sat on this concrete step in the side yard of a home inside the very secure Village, no one from inside the Fenir family home could possibly be watching me. So who the hell—
“That’s a cute tank top, Mo.”
I smiled before opening my eyes, twisting my body to look behind me. A familiar woman that was the same age as Allie and me slowly walked up, her slim boots making zero noise on the grass. She was smiling at me as her short, dark brown hair whipped around her face. Her ringed eyes, a blend of dark grey and teal, locked on me, shining with her smile as she came to sit beside me.
“Hey Tancy.” I greeted her, leaning into the side hug she offered. “Watcha doing here so late? And where’s Ambroz?”
Tancy Devit is the Match and girlfriend of Emerys’ twin brother Ambroz. She lives with the younger twin and their mother Irene, all of whom are Vampires. She’s also a good friend and coworker of mine and has taken on several different group assignments with me as a Scout along with Ambroz. They’re both very skilled spies and even use their relationship as a cover to worm their way into obtaining information that has helped protect our people. Tancy is the tech wiz of the group too and was the person I snuck into my family's home to place the many hidden video and audio surveillance systems throughout it.
“He’s at home, sleeping off the last few days that he’s been on assignment.” She giggled, shaking her head while a flicker of worry passed through her eyes. “Poor baby’s been following a possible high value target that has links to some big Hunter groups for the last eighteen days. But then he was recalled and told to come home this morning, so he’s running on very little sleep.”
That instantly caught my attention and I was about to question why he was recalled while following someone important to the Hunters. But she cut me off and continued, locking eyes with me as she went.
“All Scouts, Informants and Enforcers working here or planning to relocate to the Village are being called in.”
My brow arched. “Why?”
“The newly appointed Lieutenants that are in charge of the Village are setting up a meet-N-greet for all of us. They want to add formal interviews to our dossier so they have it on paper that they’ve met us and have connected to us face-to-face.” That worry grew and I realized that she wasn’t feeling it for her boyfriend. She was worried for me. “They’ve also got a bunch of paperwork listing our background too…”
“Oh.” I replied stupidly, finally seeing why she was concerned. “And once they see my family name…”
She nodded, her frown deepening before she jumped and grabbed my shoulders, a flash of determination glowing in her eyes.
“You can’t let them fire you, Mo!” She all but shouted. “You’ve proven yourself many times over and have helped us protect our people dozens of times.” Her grip on my shoulders tightened some more and her fangs flashed as she spoke. “You’re even spying on your own family to help us! And you’ve saved my ass more times than I can count.” Her eyes darted to the side before returning to me a second later. “And Ambrozs’ ass too.”
I laughed and hugged her, rocking her from side to side a little before pulling back.
“Don’t worry, Tan.” I told her, keeping one arm around her shoulders. “I’m not going anywhere. And I sure as hell ain’t letting anyone fire me or stop me from doing what I’m doing.” I then paused, looking her over once more before a sudden thought hit me. “How’d you know I was here, anyway?”
She grinned sheepishly, pulling back and looking at anything other than me.
“I kinda, maybe, sorta tagged your bike after our last assignment.” She muttered, making my jaw drop. “I know! I know! I was just testing some new gear and I wanted to make sure it would work for long stints of time.” I playfully glared at her, shaking my head and wondering how many times she was going to use me as her guinea pig to test out her new fancy tech-toys. “Sorry.” She pouted, giving me her big puppy-eyes and fighting back an obvious smile.
“Get out of here.” I laughed out, poking her in the ribs to make her laugh before she got up and moved away. “Go cuddle up with your man and relax, ok?” She nodded slowly, still looking a little worried. “I’m not going anywhere, Tan.”
“Promise?” She called out, shifting in her boots a little. “I wouldn’t have made it as far as I have without you backing me up.” Her eyes became distant and she bowed her head as sadness coated her voice. “Ambroz almost lost his brother if you hadn’t been there… and I would’ve died long ago too, without your help.”
“I swear, Tancy.” I told her firmly, smiling when she finally smiled back at me. “No one is going to fire me. Not without a fight.”
