Maggie woke with a start. There was someone in the room with her! She sat up and rubbed her eyes to clear the sleep so that she could better focus on the shadows around her. She was still in somewhat unfamiliar territory. Due to her accident in the barn, she was still unable to climb the stairs to the room she and her sister Vera had shared since childhood, so their father had set up a temporary bed for her in what had, until recently, been the storeroom. The room had one tiny window right at the top of the farthest wall which barely let in enough light to see by. But, as her mother kept reminding her, it was her own fault for being so clumsy in the first place.
