The men raced to the Cunnings’ farm in two carriages. Mathew took the reins for his with his men in the back, while Vincent led the way with Father James in the church wagon. Having relayed his tale to the best of his ability, a very shaken Cedric was given wine to fortify him and help to calm his shattered nerves. Even then it was decided that he was far too distraught to be of any use back at the farm, so he was left in the capable hands of Mrs Oakes while the others left in the two carriages.
