I couldn't hold back any longer. "A joke? Do you think this is funny? Dennis isn't as naïve as you think, and regardless, it's not something you have the right to turn into a joke. My son deserves respect, and I won't allow any of you to hurt him this way."
A heavy silence fell after my words. One by one, the group lowered their heads, visibly uncomfortable. They knew they had crossed a line. Seeing their awkwardness, I spoke again, clear and firm: "Don't ever say things like that again. If I hear any more malicious words from you, I won't let it slide."
None of them dared to say anything more. They muttered some quick goodbyes and hurried off. I stood there, watching them leave my neighborhood, my heart still burning with anger.
