Unable to resist any longer, I turned and opened the door, hurrying toward Jackie, who was walking away down the street. "Jackie!" I called out, making him stop and turn around.
He looked at me in surprise, but his warm smile remained. "What's going on?" he asked.
I approached him, feeling a brief wave of embarrassment, but it wasn't enough to stop me. "I just wanted to say... I'm sorry," I said, my voice faltering slightly. "I'm sorry for how I treated you before. I misunderstood and... didn't treat you fairly."
