Those past wounds

2003 Words

"What happened to you?" Laura gasped as she took in Corey’s appearance. His face was swollen with bruises, and his left hand was in a cast. The sight of him so battered shook her to her core. She quickly placed her bag on the table and rushed toward him. "Let’s break up," Corey said flatly, his voice devoid of emotion. Laura froze mid-step. "What?" she blinked, her heart sinking. "You're joking, right?" She managed a nervous laugh, hoping he was just playing some cruel prank. But Corey’s expression remained grim. "I'm serious. Let’s break up. Don’t come here anymore." Laura stared at him in disbelief, her stomach churning. "Why? You can't just ask me to leave like that! We’ve been together for four years, Corey!" Her voice trembled, rising in pitch as frustration and hurt spilled out.
