Chapter 17

1741 Words
Kenny's POV Sitting alone in the room designated for me, I gazed at the photographs my mother had sent over. The images were of Lodwig's daughter, Sasha, a stunning 18-year-old girl. I couldn't shake the feeling that her father had orchestrated this whole marriage concept, pushing her into a rather absurd idea. It was her opportunity to look for her mate and bask in eternal love. My thoughts drifted towards Nuzo. He wasn't someone I had intended to be with, considering my role in the demise of his mate. Yet, here we were, united. Sasha's image resurfaced in my mind, and an undeniable notion grew within me – she and Nuzo would have been an impeccable match. Strangely enough, a pang of remorse washed over me. They both truly deserved better. As I mulled over these conflicting emotions, I admitted to myself that matters of the heart were far from my forte. Love, in its intricate essence, felt alien to me. An image of Nuzo, content after coitus, flashed before my eyes. It was in that moment that I recognized a potential within me to genuinely care for someone romantically. Nuzo's strength, intellect, and self-reliance only added to his appeal, serving as unexpected bonuses that I couldn't overlook. "Kenny, can we talk?" Tony's voice was soft, almost hesitant. My gaze remained fixed on the photographs, not turning to acknowledge him. He continued, "I am sorry about everything. I know that I must fulfill my role as an Alpha and take charge. Honestly, it seemed like you had everything under control and planned, making me seem like a mockery of an alpha." His words were sincere, his tone serious, conveying a genuine sentiment. Without warning, he took a seat beside me and his hand landed on my thigh. The unexpected touch prompted me to swiftly remove his hand and rise from my seat. Now, I was facing him directly. "Tony, what's the real reason you're here? Why the apology?" I asked, my voice tinged with curiosity and a hint of suspicion. I hoped for an honest response, something beyond the surface. His reply caught me off guard, taking a different direction than I had anticipated. "I need your help. Without you, I don't stand a chance against Lodwig. Please, Kenny, help me and Tiny just this once. I'll be in your debt for the rest of my life." His plea was unexpected, stirring a mix of emotions within me. I had hoped for an apology of a different nature, something unspoken between us. But now, he was asking for assistance, laying himself bare. His next words, however, struck me oddly. "I must admit that your Beta, Nuzo, is an exceptionally talented young man." Despite his seemingly harmless comment, a sense of unease settled within me. It was as if there was a hidden implication behind those words. I stared at him intently, sensing an unspoken agenda. His gaze met mine, an expectancy lingering in his eyes, waiting for my response. "Say we do win today, what's in it for me? And how do I know you won't turn against me?" I addressed Tony directly, my voice holding a note of skepticism. Tony let out a sigh, seeming to contemplate his response. "I'm sorry about touching your Beta. It won't happen again," he apologized, attempting to divert the conversation. "Tony, it's time to address my question directly. Stop skirting around it," I insisted firmly. While Tony appeared unimpressed by my assertiveness, he seemed to be holding himself back, perhaps understanding the gravity of the situation and our potential cooperation. I couldn't shake the nagging feeling that Tony and Tiny might not hesitate to turn on me immediately after dealing with Lodwig. "Will you turn against me once I help you defeat Lodwig?" I decided to be blunt, cutting through the uncertainties. I noticed Tony's heart rate quicken, but he managed to regain his composure before responding. "No, you've known me since I was young. You're like a big brother to me..." he started, his words carrying a subtle undertone. Yet, my intuition told me there was more to his words than met the eye. The unsettling part was that he was lying, a fact that wasn't lost on me. "Alright then, prove it. Go out there and publicly announce that you're stepping down as Alpha, handing over your pack to me. Become my Beta," I challenged Tony, pushing for a tangible demonstration of his allegiance. He stared at me, his expression a mix of shock and disbelief. My proposal had clearly caught him off guard. "This pack is all I have, my family's legacy. How could you even ask me such a thing?" Tony's voice trembled as he responded, his words echoing with astonishment. With a firm yet measured tone, I countered, "I have a mate to protect, Tony. You might still see me as the old Kenny, the one you once tried to prove yourself against. And yes, Nuzo is my weakness, but he's also my strength. Protecting him as my mate is my responsibility, even though we both acknowledge his self-sufficiency." "He's not your mate. The bond you have can be broken. I don't understand why you don't just choose Tiny. She can give you heirs. But this boy..." Tony's voice dripped with bitterness, his words pointed and resentful. "There it is, the truth finally surfaces," I chuckled, an ironic amusement coloring my tone. I pressed on, not allowing his bitterness to go unchecked. "Funny, isn't it? The man whose mate decided to conspire against him with Lodwig is now pointing fingers at us. While my mate and I are here to assist, your partner and other pack members are apparently too preoccupied plotting your downfall." I let the weight of my words settle before delivering the final ultimatum. "Well, Tony, if you truly want my help, then you'll do as I say. I might lose my pack, but I've just gained myself a new one. Thanks to you." With that, I rose from my seat and left behind a stunned Tony, walking away with the conviction that I held the upper hand in this precarious alliance. As I entered the meeting room, the conversations hushed, and all eyes turned towards me. Nuzo stood at the center, a magnetic presence in the room. I walked over and positioned myself by his side, feeling a surge of solidarity between us. Gently, I clasped his hand and raised it, a silent gesture that held a weight of its own. And then, with conviction, I addressed the gathering. "I've chosen Nuzo as my mate. His gender doesn't matter to me, and the absence of an heir is a choice we've made willingly. I assure you that my pack's future won't crumble due to this decision. Even without offspring, a successor will emerge – be it a sibling, a nephew, or a clan-selected alpha. The my pack's legacy is resilient." A murmur of reassurance and understanding swept through the room, individuals acknowledging their alignment with my stance. I continued, "Is there anyone who takes issue with my choice of mate?" Denials and subdued murmurs spread, indicating acceptance and unity. With their agreement evident, I pressed further, rallying their spirits. "Then you stand with me as your war leader, committed to securing victory in this impending battle?" Their voices rose in a chorus of agreement, a resounding show of support. "Alpha Tony," I declared, turning the attention to him, "there's a message you wish to share with all of us before we march into war. The floor is yours." Tony was momentarily taken aback, caught off guard by the spotlight suddenly cast upon him. The room's attention centered on him, awaiting his response. Tony's gaze swept across the room, encompassing the faces of those gathered; his uncertainty was palpable. He glanced at Tiny, exchanged a fleeting look with Nuzo, then directed his attention to the assembled crowd, finally meeting my eyes. With a resolute breath, he raised his hand, the gesture poised to signify his intent to speak. The room fell silent as Alpha Tony began to speak. "I want to take this moment to express my gratitude to everyone in this room for believing in the pack and being willing to fight. Most importantly, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Alpha Kenny and Beta Nuzo for guiding us through these difficult times." "Lastly," Tony continued, his voice unwavering, "I consider it a great honor to have served all of you as an Alpha. Regardless of the outcome today, I want each of you to understand that I am willing to do anything for this pack, even if it means relinquishing my role as an Alpha. As long as my pack is safe and content, I am fulfilled. After the battle, when the dust settles, Alpha Kenny…" But before he could complete the sentence, I interjected with a playful tone, interrupting his speech. "Come on, Alpha Tony, your pack deserves a better motivational speech," I teased, a lighthearted smirk playing on my lips. His moment of seriousness was met with a touch of humor, lightening the atmosphere. Tony seemed to gather himself, taking a deep breath as if drawing strength from within. He spoke again, his voice carrying a newfound conviction. "With Kenny and his mate standing by our side, victory is within our grasp in this war. I wholeheartedly believe in each and every one of you, and I'm prepared to lay down my life for all of yours. Let's march forward and claim our victory." The room erupted into enthusiastic cheers, the collective spirit of determination and camaraderie filling the air. I approached Tony, lifting his hand in a gesture of solidarity. "To Alpha Tony," I proclaimed, and the cheers swelled even louder, a show of support for the leader who was rallying them to face the imminent challenge. As I looked at Tony, a mixture of relief and apprehension lingered. I understood the risk in trusting that he wouldn't betray us after the battle was won. I glanced at Nuzo, my concern was evident in his eyes. "We'll be fine, Alpha," Nuzo assured me, attempting to allay my worries. I offered a forced chuckle and patted his back, acknowledging his attempt to soothe my unease. The reality was that in war, nothing was guaranteed. All I could do was trust in our alliance and hope that our efforts would bear fruit.
