Chapter 6

645 Words
It was an i********: post from Lila. Happy Thanksgiving. My Honey brought me to the research lab to help with a project. I'm so happy. He also said I'll be leading the next-generation biochip project from now on. In the attached photo, Lila was holding the latest-generation biochip. That chip was one of Natalie's unfinished projects. That coworker sent another message. A: Look at Lila. She has no shame. She's trying to pass your work off as hers. This time, Natalie didn't care. She only replied with one line. Natalie: I hadn't finished it anyway. If she wants it that badly, she can have it. Lila was only a front-desk assistant, yet she wanted to pass herself off as technical talent. It was almost laughable. Late that night, after spending Thanksgiving with her parents, Natalie was picked up and driven back to the Institute. On the way back, the driver couldn't resist gossiping with her. "Ms. Hayes, I heard you used to work at Pierce Biotech. Is that right?" Natalie didn't deny it. "Yes. Why?" "I overheard a few big shots talking today. They said Pierce Biotech basically cut its own lifeline when it laid people off. But their boss doesn't seem to realize it. He spends every day partying." The driver sighed. "Some bosses really have no conscience. The moment the company goes public, they throw away the people who helped them make it." Natalie said nothing. It wasn't only bosses. Husbands could be the same. The old cliché was true. Once some men gained money and power, they cast aside the wives who had struggled beside them. Ethan was no different. ***** Meanwhile, Ethan and Lila had spent the whole day having fun. That night, Lila leaned into his arms. "Honey, are you happy when you're with me?" "I am," Ethan said sincerely. Lately, Ethan had finally felt alive again. Back when Ethan was with Natalie, she always reminded him that running the company came with pressure and that he couldn't just relax. After all, the entire company depended on him. But after Lila came into his life, she would say, "Honey, you're the boss. Why do you have to handle everything yourself? That work should be delegated to your staff." Ethan took Lila's advice and handed company affairs over to his subordinates. They were told not to bother him unless something truly important happened. At that moment, Lila took out her phone again and posted another photo on i********:. From now on, I want us to be happy forever. Early the next morning, the two of them booked plane tickets to Liora Island. After landing on the island, they went to beach bars, visited Emerald Forest, and joined a Liora Coast dolphin watching tour. Ethan took Lila from one place to another. During the trip, Ethan often thought about the years he had spent with Natalie. He realized he had never taken Natalie on a real vacation, so he spent even more lavishly on Lila, as if pouring money into this trip could make up for all the vacations Natalie had never had. For the next month, the two of them lived so freely that they almost forgot everything else. Even after all that time, Ethan still hadn't heard that Natalie had found another job. He thought of Clearwater Court, the aging faculty housing complex where Natalie's parents lived, and a trace of pity stirred in him. After thinking it over, Ethan sent Natalie another message. Ethan: If you've learned your lesson, come back to my side. The next second, he saw the notice that Natalie had blocked him. Ethan sneered and tossed his phone aside. Just then, the phone on the floor began vibrating wildly. For a moment, Ethan thought Natalie was calling. But when he picked up, he heard his assistant's panicked voice. "Mr. Pierce, something happened to the company!"
