Charon stumbled a bit as he and Minerva materialized in what appeared to be an empty field.  He only just got used to travelling by Gate key on his own; with another person is a whole other ball game. He made sure to keep a hold of Minerva’s hand as they moved through the field mainly because the tower liked to play mind games and if you weren’t with someone who knew the way, you are very likely to get lost and never found again.  It felt like they had been walking forever before they came to a stone archway with Minerva’s symbol etched into it.
