Chapter 4

1059 Words
The following morning was overcast, the clouds heavy with the promise of rain, as Ashyra and the others prepared to leave the Silverclaw Pack’s territory. The air was thick with tension, the same unspoken charge that had plagued her thoughts since last night. She couldn’t escape it. The bond. And worse, she couldn’t escape him. The entire group was ready to depart, but her gaze kept drifting back to Stephan, standing off to the side, as always, aloof and distant. His dark silhouette against the dim sky made her stomach tighten, the awareness of his presence almost too much to bear. “You okay?” Luca’s voice broke through her reverie, and Ashyra turned to him, forcing a tight smile. “I’m fine,” she lied, adjusting the weight of her pack and trying to push the flood of thoughts out of her mind. Luca didn’t seem convinced, but he didn’t press. Instead, he nodded and moved to join the others. Ashyra lingered, watching Stephan as he spoke with his Beta in hushed tones, his body language as cold and rigid as ever. But then something changed. A sharp, guttural cry echoed through the trees, followed by the unmistakable snap of branches breaking. The cry wasn’t human—it was the sound of something far more dangerous. The entire group froze, their eyes wide in alarm. Ashyra’s heart hammered in her chest. Before anyone could react, the air shifted. The forest grew darker, as if the world itself were holding its breath. A shadow moved quickly between the trees, faster than any wolf could run. “Stay alert!” Stephan’s voice cut through the air, calm and commanding, but his eyes were already scanning the horizon, his posture bracing for battle. Ashyra’s heart dropped. She knew what this was. A rogue—a dangerous, unpredictable rogue who had been terrorizing the borders of their territory for weeks. But this wasn’t just any rogue. This was the one who had been hunting her. She felt the weight of the bond stir again, stronger now than ever before. She could feel his presence, even without seeing him. And she hated it. “We need to move,” Stephan said, his voice dark with urgency. His eyes met hers for the first time that day, and the connection between them flared, making her breath catch in her throat. There was something in his gaze now—something different. Something… desperate. Ashyra’s pulse quickened, but she forced herself to focus. There was no room for hesitation, not when they were on the verge of being attacked. As the group made their way through the dense woods, Ashyra’s mind raced. She tried to ignore the way her wolf strained against her skin, the bond tugging at her chest with each step, making it impossible to concentrate. Every breath felt like a struggle. But it wasn’t just the bond that made her uneasy. It was the weight of the moment, the tension that hung between her and Stephan. They were about to face a deadly threat—one that neither of them could defeat alone. And yet, there was no denying the truth: They couldn’t work together. Not yet. The rogue appeared in a blur, a hulking figure leaping from the shadows, his eyes wild with rage. Ashyra’s body instinctively responded, her wolf taking control, but before she could move, Stephan was there, his massive form stepping in front of her. She froze, her mind battling with the overwhelming urge to lash out. But Stephan’s presence stilled her. The bond flickered and surged, wrapping around them both, a reminder of what they shared, what they had never wanted. “Get back, Ashyra,” Stephan growled, his voice low and commanding. “This rogue is mine.” But Ashyra couldn’t stand back—not now, not when the danger was so close. With a growl of her own, she stepped forward, her claws extending as her wolf surged to the surface. “No,” she snapped. “We fight together.” Stephan hesitated, his eyes flashing with something dangerous—something raw and vulnerable. The tension between them crackled like lightning, thick and suffocating. The rogue lunged, a snarl ripping from its throat, and they were forced into action. Ashyra’s instincts kicked in. She moved in tandem with Stephan, the bond between them acting as a guiding force, pulling them into synchronicity in ways she couldn’t explain. They fought side by side, their movements fluid, their wolves intertwined in a deadly dance as they took down the rogue together. The battle was brutal. Ashyra’s heart pounded, her body screaming with adrenaline as she tore into the rogue, her senses heightened, sharpened by the bond that refused to be denied. But every time she landed a blow, every time she felt Stephan’s strength beside her, the bond flared with heat and power. It was as though the connection between them was feeding off their shared struggle, growing stronger with every moment. When the rogue finally fell, its body crumpling to the ground in a heap, the world seemed to quiet. Ashyra stood over the body, chest heaving, blood splattered across her face and arms. She could feel Stephan’s presence behind her, the heat of his body lingering, and it was like a storm was brewing between them. The bond pulsed, demanding her attention, but she ignored it, focused only on the task at hand. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. But then, Stephan’s voice broke the silence, low and strained. “We work well together, Ashyra.” Her heart raced as she turned to face him, her breath coming in quick gasps. The moment their eyes met, the tension between them became unbearable. “I didn’t ask for this bond,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper, the frustration clear in her tone. Stephan’s gaze softened, but there was something in his eyes—something she couldn’t quite place. A mixture of regret and longing. “I know,” he said quietly. “But we have to face it. Together.” Ashyra’s chest tightened. Every part of her screamed to walk away, to refuse to accept this connection. But as the bond hummed between them, as the air thickened with unspoken emotions, she realized something. There was no running from this. Not anymore.
