Chapter 1: Roommates

Autumn 2140

The leaves lost their green colouring and started to fall slowly... It's autumn, or how the students know it better... The season when school usually started. Today was also, the opening ceremony at the military academy, Senma.

"Hello, students, and welcome... To the Senma Academy!" the one talking from the big podium was none other than the academy's principal. He was a tall man, overly muscular man, with a long white beard and hair that was tied in a ponytail. After pausing for a bit, he then continued with:

"This Academy is going to be your home for the next two years. This is an honour institution that teaches you more than just military tactics and fighting... It teaches you how to survive in this cruel world we are currently living in, and help with its restoration!"

"There are two classes as you might know, but remember the ones that were assigned to class 1! Just because the ones from class 2 can't use magic doesn't mean you are any better than them! Every year we have strong physical fighters that become respected soldiers in the army!"

"Without any more explanations, I want to present you this year's newcomers' representative student that got the best results at the entrance exam, Tohka Kurogane!"

 After the principal finished his presentation of the classes and also calls the representative on the stage, a girl with wonderful, black hair slowly gets up on the stage, taking the microphone...

"Hello everyone! I am so happy to be the one..."

 Her speech was pretty long, and yet, every word she spelt was in the perfect place. She truly gave off the feeling of a student representative.

 While she was still talking, another unknown figure slowly walked onto the podium... But this time, he was a boy that instead of wearing the usual military uniform, was wearing a... hoodie...

 Tohka finished her speech, and then, the principal took the microphone again.

"I am sorry that the ones from class 2 can't get to be a representative because their exam is way easier than the magic class' one. Anyway... I will present you the only student that you might not recognize. He took the entrance exam on another date due to some personal problems... Having a perfect score in the written exam, but a null score of 0 on the practical one, made him get here with a score of 50, it being the exact score that you need to take to be accepted. He is Dusk Aome!" 

 While the black-haired boy with a hoodie walked towards the principal, the atmosphere got really quiet... No one truly understood what that boy was really doing here, nor how did he get a perfect score of 50 on the entrance exam, in such a weird way.

 He didn't say much with the exception of his name and then left, leaving everyone with even more unanswered questions...

"Good, now that we said everything that you had to know, I invite all of you to get your rooms in order from my colleagues. Tomorrow, you will be free to explore the campus and get to know your classmates, and then... The true school program starts! I am looking forward to your next achievements! This was all!" said the principal, just before leaving the stage.

 After a few more minutes, a low voice could be heard from the back of the stage...

"You i***t kid!" 

 Then a strong sound could be heard, sounding like someone got hit...

"Ouch!"

 They were the principal who truly did hit Dusk and the hoodie-wearing boy that was now keeping his hands on his head... The hit from the muscular man probably hurt a lot...

"Why the heck are you wearing a hoodie at the school opening?!" asked the principal with an angry expression.

"You said that I should wear something comfy since I don't have a uniform yet!" said Dusk

"Something comfy but serious for this occasion! Whatever... Take this."

 Then, the principal handed Dusk something that looked like a pair of keys...

"Those are...?"

"Keys from your room... You will also have a roommate as well. He is a boy from the 2nd class. Don't forget... Don't do something crazy. Don't even use your magic at least until the practical lessons... If you are going to do something idiotic, you are going to get punished..." said the principal while having a diabolic look on his face, making Dusk tremble in fear...

"Y-Yes, sir!"

--- After a few minutes, Dusk starts thinking while walking on the corridor, looking for his room...

"That principal... Just because he helped me!" and then, he remembers... He was saved by the army before and then got here...

"He didn't have to smack me that hard!" he said then continued with: "I think it can't be helped... I have to learn here if I want to cure the other humans of the corruption..."

 And then, Dusk opens the door that seemed to be the one leading to his room.

"The lights are off... Nothing in here. It seems my roommate hasn't come here yet..." thinks Dusk

 Dusk leaves his baggage next to his bed and then lies onto it, looking at the program for the following days.

 After half an hour or so, Dusk almost finishes reading everything written on the program, but then he sees something standing on the other bed, next to him...

"What the-?" and then he quickly continues with: "Who are you?!"

"I am Hikari Ianku. Your roommate."

"And... Since when are you standing there?"

"I've been here for a while... I lost my key somewhere in the room and waited for you to open the door... But I fell asleep and woke up half an hour ago..."

"I didn't even see him..." thought Dusk who then asked:

"Why didn't you say anything...?"

"Umm... No personal reason..."

 Dusk started staring at him dumbfounded. He didn't talk much to him, and he already started considering his roommate a weirdo...

"You know what? I am going to sleep..." says Dusk

"Aren't you going to meet with your classmates?" 

"I could ask you the same thing."

"I don't like these kinds of things..."

"Me neither..."

 The Dusk starts thinking while laying down on his bed: "Now that I'm thinking about it, I didn't have any friend in the past neither..."

"Your name...?" asks Hikari

"Hmm?"

"I am asking you what your name is..."

"Dusk... Dusk Aome."

"Well, nice to meet you... If you say you are going to sleep, I think I am going to follow your example. Not like I have anything better to do..."

 And just like this, the two boys both went asleep, even though there was still a lot of time until the night would fall. The next day, sun rays started to finally get through the windows, falling onto Dusk's face...

 Dusk yawns, stretch once and then says:

"That was a surprisingly good sleep..."

"He isn't here..." thinks Dusk

"Well, I think I have to go out... It's my last free day for a while..."

Outside, many people were already forming ties and hanging out... Today is the free day when you can meet your classmates and explore the campus, so it was obvious why so many students were outside now.

"So many people... Are all of them students here...?" mutters Dusk

 Blindly walking, without paying any attention whatsoever, Dusks accidentally bumps into someone.

"Ouch, ouch..."

"I am sorry..." says Dusk

"I-It's fine..."

 Dusk lends the girl his hand, helping her to get up. She was a shy girl, which couldn't even look straight into his eyes, but she still thanked him. Looking more at her, Dusk finally realized who she was, and then asked her:

"Now that I am thinking... You are the newcomers' representative, right?"

"Yes... Oh, and you are the boy that came on the stage wearing a hoodie, right?"

"Ah... that... Yes, it's me..."

"Is there something wrong?" she asked. She got too close while saying this, making Dusk look away while blushing.

"N-No!"

 Tohka then looks at her with an astonished look and asks him:

"So, did you meet with our classmates yet...? Do you want to come with me and meet them?"

"Sorry, but I am currently searching... For my roommate..."

"Oh... Also! What type of magic do you use?" she asked

"Magic...?"

"Yes... We are in the magic class after all..."

"I am not specialized in any kind of magic. You already saw... I got a null result at the practical exam..."

"Oh... right. Well, see you later... Umm, Dusk was it?"

"Y-Yeah."

 While waving his hand, Dusk started thinking: "If there will be more people like her, I won't be able to keep my magic a secret..."

 Meanwhile, in the background, something that looked like a quarrel already started to be seen.

We see a student apologizing to another, that looked like he was one from the 2nd year. Looking at his uniform, the one apologizing was from the 2nd class, without magic...

"I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to-!"

"Look what you did to my uniform! Your magicless nerd! You are going to pay for this!" shouts the older student

 Even in the background, other students could be heard talking...

"He made a 2nd-year mage angry..."

"He is going to get destroyed..."

"Those normal class students always get in trouble."

"Take this you brat!" says the older student, just before launching his fist towards the normal class student.

 A hitting sound was heard, but it was not what anyone would have expected. Through the crowd, Dusk saw... Hikari caught the older student's fist with one hand, and then with a quick move, he immobilized him...

 Then two other older students jumped to attack Hikari from the back, but just at that moment...

"I think this is enough after all..." said Dusk

"You guys really don't want to give me a moment of peace..." said Hikari

 Dusk got to the other two students with incredible speed, and then, grabbing both their necks, he pinned them down onto the ground...

 Hikari seemed to know that this will happen immediately after seeing Dusk... It might've been his instinct, or just something more than that...

"That's enough!" shouted one random voice that quickly approached the scene,

 The voice was of a student's with a red badge on her uniform, coming to the fight's place...

"Get them... You guys are coming with me to the principal..." said the girl to the other two students that arrived behind her.

 While in the principal's office, the problem was solved, and the older students were found guilty.

Only Dusk, Hikari and also the Student Discipline Leader remained with the principal...

"It isn't even your first school day and you already got in trouble..." said the principal.

"I didn't use magic though!" quickly answers Dusk

"Well, you are right... And also, I see you have met your roommate, Hikari Ianku. He is the best from the normal student's class, and I also hired him to be the one that keeps you in check..."

"Well, I already found out... He is not the best liar, and I could see you doing that..."

 Then, the Discipline Leader approached Dusk and Hikari and said:

"I am Maya Sanae... The Student Discipline Leader and a 2nd-year student! After seeing your abilities, I would like to invite you to join... I am sure you would do a great job in our team!"

"Sorry, but being busier than I normally am is not something I am looking for... I don't fit for that job..." says Dusk

"If he doesn't go I won't as well... And the only thing I can do is sleep, so probably, I wouldn't be helping anybody..." said Hikari

 Then the principal intervened in their talk, saying:

"If you have finished your talking, you can leave! You still have a little bit of time left this day..." he said.

"Yes, sir!" said all of the present students, then leaving the office at once...
