Chapter 2

850 Words
Early the next morning, I woke up at six as usual. I tied on an apron, opened the refrigerator, and took out eggs and bacon. I was going to make myself a hearty breakfast. After all, I needed enough strength and energy to file for divorce. The kitchen slowly filled with the smell of sizzling bacon and coffee. I heard footsteps on the stairs. Out of habit, I stood up straighter and flipped the bacon. "Good morning. What a dedicated housekeeper." It was Sienna's voice. I turned and saw her walking downstairs in a man's white shirt. It was Nathan's shirt. I had given it to him on our anniversary. The oversized hem barely covered the tops of Sienna's thighs. Her pale, smooth legs kept flashing in front of me. Hot oil from the bacon splattered onto the back of my hand, but I didn't feel the pain. "Nathan isn't up yet?" Sienna leaned against the kitchen doorframe and gave a lazy yawn. "He was exhausted last night. He works so hard at the company every day, and when he came home, he still kept me up for a meeting... Oh, did I say too much?" She covered her mouth as if she had misspoken, but there wasn't a trace of apology in her eyes. Instead, she looked at me with a sly smile. I put the bacon on a plate. My voice was so flat that even I was surprised. "Breakfast is ready. You can eat first." "Claire, you're so capable." Sienna pulled out a chair, sat down, and speared a piece of bacon with her fork. After one bite, she frowned. "Tsk. It's a little salty. I prefer lighter food, so use less salt next time." I said nothing. I untied the apron and placed it on the counter. Then I went upstairs and pushed open the study door. Nathan was already awake. He sat behind the desk reading documents. He looked up at me. His gaze was indifferent, as if I were a housekeeper who had come in to deliver coffee. "What is it?" I stood in front of him, my face blank. "Did you see the document I left outside your door last night?" Nathan's brows drew together, full of impatience. "I didn't have time. The company is working on a major project, and Sienna is helping me with the plan. We discussed it until very late." "You discussed it until midnight, and somehow her clothes came off, so she had to wear your shirt?" The moment I said it, even I was a little surprised. I had said it so calmly. There was no hurt in my voice. There wasn't even jealousy. Nathan's tone cooled. "Are you questioning me?" He put down the document and leaned back in his chair, studying me with an assessing gaze. His eyes moved from my messy bun to my bloodless face, then finally landed on my hands, rough from housework. He let out a laugh with no warmth in it. "Look in the mirror and see what you have become. There is nothing feminine about you anymore. How could you possibly compare to her? She can go from an international conference call in the morning to a midnight merger negotiation. Can you? She can accompany me to any event, polished and beautiful, and stand beside me in the boardroom. Can you?" Nathan stood and walked up to me, looming over me. "In this home, what have you done besides cooking and cleaning?" After saying that, he walked past me, opened the door, and left. Sienna's sweet voice came from the hallway. "Nathan, come eat breakfast. The bacon your wife made is so salty. You should talk to her. If she wants us to come home for dinner, she needs to put in more effort. If she really can't manage it, I can cook." "You don't need to cook." Nathan's voice suddenly softened. "Your hands are meant for signing contracts, not cooking." The door closed. I stood in the empty study and smelled the lingering scent of wild rose in the air. Then I slowly picked up my phone and found a number I hadn't dialed in three years. The call rang three times before it connected. A man's voice came through, low and lazy, rough with the hoarseness of someone who had just been pulled from sleep. But the instant he realized it was me, he was fully awake. "Claire? It has been three years. I thought you would never call this number again." "Lorenzo, you once said De Angelis Enterprises and Blackwell Group would remain enemies until one destroyed the other. Does that still stand?" The other end of the line went quiet for a moment. Then Lorenzo De Angelis gave a low laugh. Something long suppressed stirred beneath it. "It isn't just the companies. He and I are enemies, too." "Good." I looked out the window at the black car driving through the mansion gates. I watched the two people inside sitting side by side, and the corner of my mouth slowly lifted. "Lorenzo, we should meet."
