34. Broken Trust

637 Words
As soon as the bell rang and the class came to an end, students began packing their bags and filing out, many still glancing back at Clara with looks of pity, judgment, or curiosity. The room felt heavy and cold, and Clara could barely feel her legs as she stood up. Ignoring everyone else, she walked straight over to where Adrian was sitting, her heart pounding wildly in her chest. Her eyes were already red and swollen from crying, and her voice shook as she spoke. “Adrian, please… this can’t be the end. You can’t just leave me like this. You know me, you know I would never do anything like that.” Before he could reply, she reached out and grabbed hold of his arm tightly, her fingers trembling as she clung to him. “Please don’t leave me alone. I have no one else but you right now.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. He turned his head away, unable to look her in the eye, and spoke in a cold, distant tone. “Clara, let go of my hand.” But Clara did not let go. She held on even tighter, tears rolling down her cheeks. “No, not until you listen to me! It’s not true, I swear—” Suddenly, Adrian turned back to face her, his expression hard and unyielding, his voice rising loud enough for those nearby to hear. “Let go! I don’t even want to see your face right now. It makes me sick to look at you.” The words hit Clara like a physical blow. Her grip loosened, and her knees gave way beneath her. She sank slowly down onto the floor, sitting there in the middle of the classroom, her shoulders shaking as she broke into loud, heart-wrenching sobs. She felt as though her whole world was crumbling right in front of her, and the only person she trusted was pushing her away. After a moment, she lifted her tear-streaked face and looked around until her eyes fell on Stella, who was standing nearby pretending to look sad and concerned. Clara got up slowly, walked over to her, and took her hands desperately. “Stella, please—you were there with me last night. You know what really happened. Tell me the truth! Tell everyone it’s not what it looks like!” Stella lowered her head, avoiding Clara’s gaze, and let out a long, heavy sigh as if she felt sorry for her. When she finally spoke, her voice was soft but firm, meant to sound like she was sharing a painful fact. “Clara… I wish I could say something else, but you have to remember what you did. You weren’t yourself last night. You drank so much at the party that you got completely drunk. You wouldn’t listen to anything I said, you wouldn’t stop talking or moving, and you lost all control. I tried to stop you, I really did, but you were out of your mind. That’s how you ended up in that room. I didn’t know what else to do.” Clara stared at her in disbelief, her mind spinning. “Drunk? No… I don’t remember drinking anything at all! I only had one glass of water Stella, that’s all!” Stella shook her head sadly, putting a hand on Clara’s shoulder. “You must have forgotten because of how much you drank. That happens when you have too much—it blurs your memory. I’m telling you exactly what I saw.” With those words, Stella pulled her hands away and turned to leave, leaving Clara standing there alone, confused, heartbroken, and with no way to prove what really happened. To everyone listening, it seemed like Stella was just being honest, and Clara was trying to deny her own actions.
