Ian’s face stuck out the window, watching the Wyoming wilderness creep by as Zach drove one of the company vans down the dirt road to William’s Lake. He heard his mom talk with Zach and Alyssa about J.J., and what had happened to his girlfriend. He didn’t know what ‘attempted r**e, s****l assault’ meant, but he had a sick feeling in his stomach. They were all serious during breakfast. It was his idea to ask Zach if he could come with the party going to the lake. He wanted to see more of the Preserve, and he also knew his mom worried what he would do by himself while she cleaned cabins and handled the phone.
Listening to Zach answer questions about the Preserve, he also heard the questions one of the kids in the van asked his father. Ian knew he had a father, everyone did, because with
