5 It was late afternoon by the time J.J. finished mucking out stalls and adding new bedding. To make the job a little easier, he had put the horses in the large paddock so none would think to squeeze by him and out the open stall door. Tossing the last shovelful of shavings from the bucket of the small tractor into the end stall, he climbed up onto the seat and drove the tractor out of the barn to the shed behind the haystack. Closing the double doors behind him, he gathered the halters, two at a time, and began the process of placing everyone back in their stall. Each one sniffed the bedding, rolled, peed, but not always in that order. With all fifteen horses secured, and looking at him expectantly, he decided he might as well feed a little early.
