31 Zach kept checking the time on his phone. At ten, he hoped Carli would be asleep so he could inspect the buildings and parking area and not disturb her or Fiona, who texted him when she arrived home. Alyssa was getting ready for bed when he told her he was going to do a quick walk around outside, make sure all was quiet. He had his keys and would lock the front door of the cabin. As soon as he stepped out onto the small porch, he smelled it. Frowning, he looked toward the lodge. Spreading the logs in the lobby fireplace when everyone left the lower level was second nature to those who lived here. Was Carli or Fiona still awake? He quickly checked his phone to make sure he hadn’t missed a text or a call. Nope. Nothing. Reaching the edge of the parking lot, he saw something glossy. Ice?
