Chapter 6: A Name Worth Killing For
The name Black Shield rattled around in Lola’s mind as she drove through the streets of Lagos. Whatever it was, it had been important enough for Funmi to die for.
She pulled into the Lagos Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) office, where records of businesses were kept. If Black Shield was tied to BLP Holdings, there would be a paper trail.
Inside, she flashed her badge at the front desk. "Detective Ajibade. I need company records."
The clerk, an older woman with tired eyes, barely looked up. "What company?"
Lola hesitated for a second. "Black Shield."
The clerk’s fingers paused mid-typing. A flicker of recognition.
There it is.
She looked up, her voice quieter. "That file… it’s restricted."
Lola tensed. "Restricted by who?"
The clerk swallowed. "Government order. Even I can’t access it."
Lola exhaled slowly. So, this wasn’t just about fraud. This was bigger. Political. Dangerous.
She slid a ₦5,000 note across the desk. "Give me something."
The clerk hesitated, then scribbled something on a small notepad and pushed it towards her. "This man came asking about the file two days ago."
Lola picked up the note.
"Chief Lawrence Odukoya."
Her breath caught.
Chief Lawrence Odukoya—a high-ranking politician, billionaire businessman, and the owner of BLP Holdings. A man so powerful that even government agencies bowed at his name.
This wasn’t just fraud. This was corruption at the highest level.
And Funmi had gotten too close.
Lola folded the note and walked out of the office, her mind racing.
She had a name.
But if she wasn’t careful, that name could be the last thing she ever spoke.
