The group piled into Josh's beat-up old car, laughter and excited chatter filling the cramped space. Marigold sat quietly, her worry growing with each passing moment. Andi was animatedly complaining to Josh about Max's visit to Marigold, but Marigold wasn't paying much attention. Instead, she gazed out the window at the ominous rain clouds gathering overhead.
Her thoughts drifted back to a memory from several years ago, at a backyard party hosted by Andi's parents. They had been swimming in the pool, enjoying the warm afternoon. The grill was sizzling with barbecue, and various sides were spread out on picnic tables—corn on the cob, potato salad, and coleslaw.
Suddenly, rain began to pour down out of nowhere. Marigold remembered how good Max looked in his swimsuit, his lean muscles glistening with water. She had felt a flutter of nerves, too worried to say anything because he was Josh's brother, and she didn't want to risk the dynamics of their friend group.
As the rain intensified, Max had offered her a hand to help her out of the pool. She remembered slipping and being caught against his warm chest, her heart racing as his piercing blue eyes seemed to see right through her. He had checked to make sure she was alright, his touch gentle yet firm. Embarrassed, she had quickly looked away, but the feel of his hand lingered as they ran together to get inside out of the rain, laughing and soaked.
Coming out of the memory, Marigold absentmindedly rubbed the palm of her hand with her thumb, thinking about how good Max had looked today in his button-down shirt and slacks. She felt a pang of longing mixed with the worry that gnawed at her.
As they arrived at The Gardens, Marigold's heart skipped a beat. Standing at the entrance, with his arms crossed and a determined look on his face, was Max. He was dressed in shorts and a fitted tee shirt that accentuated his muscular build. His stance was resolute, and his expression serious.
Marigold's friends fell silent as they noticed him, their excitement dampening. She could feel the tension in the air as Max took a step forward, his eyes locking onto hers. This night was about to take a turn she hadn't anticipated.
Everyone got out of the car, the excitement dissipating into tension. Josh, visibly annoyed, marched straight up to Max.
"What the hell are you doing here, Max?" Josh snapped, his voice rising with irritation.
"I'm here to stop you from making a huge mistake," Max shot back, his eyes narrowing. "You guys are playing with fire every time you go to The Gardens, but bringing new people into this mess is unacceptable."
"New people?" Josh scoffed. "We're all friends here. We've been doing this for weeks, and nothing bad has happened. You're just overreacting."
Marigold stood to the side, listening but not intervening. She didn't want to go if they were going to fight about it, especially with the tension already simmering. She noticed how Max's eyes briefly met hers, and she caught a flicker of something she couldn't quite place.
"You don't get it, Josh," Max growled, clenching his fists. "If you idiots want to keep doing this, fine, but bringing new people into it is reckless. It's not just about you. You're putting others at risk."
Josh's expression shifted, a knowing look spreading across his face. "Oh, I see how it is," he said, smirking. "This isn't just about The Gardens, is it? You're worried about Marigold."
Max's anger flared, and he took a step forward, his face inches from Josh's. "This has nothing to do with her and everything to do with you being irresponsible. Bringing anyone new into this is a bad idea."
Josh laughed, the sound grating against Marigold's nerves. "We're going in and we're going to have a good time. If you're so worried, why don't you come with us?" He winked at Max, the gesture dripping with condescension.
Max looked like he wanted to punch Josh, but instead, he took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Fine," he said through gritted teeth. "I'll come. But don't say I didn't warn you."
Josh turned away, clearly pleased with himself, and started walking toward The Gardens. The others followed, with Max trailing behind, his expression a mix of anger and determination. Marigold's heart ached with worry, but she knew there was no turning back now.
