Shadow Hunter Mafia – Chapter 3 Possessive Hearts Rain poured over Blackstone City long after midnight. The streets glistened beneath neon lights while thunder rolled across the distant sky. Inside an abandoned safehouse near the edge of the city, Elena Brooks sat beside a window, staring at the storm outside. Her life had completely changed in only a few days. She was no longer an ordinary journalist. Now she was being hunted. By criminals. By corrupt politicians. And possibly by the Shadow Hunter Mafia itself. Across the room, Rex stood silently near a table covered with maps, weapons, and stolen files. His expression remained calm, but his mind was far from peaceful. He had disobeyed Shadow. For the first time in years. And he knew the consequences would be severe. Elena finally broke the silence. "You haven't slept." Rex glanced at her. "Neither have you." A small smile appeared on Elena's face. "Fair point." For a brief moment, the tension disappeared. Then Elena noticed blood on Rex's sleeve. "You're injured." "It's nothing." "That's exactly what you always say." Before Rex could protest, Elena grabbed the medical kit and walked toward him. He remained still. Watching her. Elena carefully rolled up his sleeve. A deep cut crossed his arm. Her eyes widened. "This is not nothing." Rex looked away. Pain never bothered him. But somehow Elena's concern did. Because nobody had worried about him in years. As she cleaned the wound, silence filled the room again. Not uncomfortable silence. Something different. Something warm. Elena tied the bandage carefully. "There." Rex looked at the bandage. Then at her. "Thank you." The words surprised both of them. Because Rex rarely thanked anyone. Elena smiled softly. "You're welcome." Far across the city, inside Shadow Hunter headquarters, Shadow sat alone in darkness. The room was silent except for the sound of rain hitting the windows. A woman entered confidently. Long silver hair. Sharp eyes. Black leather jacket. Her name was Selene. One of Shadow Hunter's deadliest operatives. Shadow didn't look up. "Report." Selene placed photographs on the table. Pictures of Rex and Elena together. Leaving buildings. Escaping enemies. Talking. Protecting each other. Shadow studied the images silently. "Interesting." Selene crossed her arms. "He's becoming attached." Shadow's eyes darkened. "Attachment creates weakness." "Should I eliminate the girl?" The room became quiet. Finally Shadow spoke. "No." Selene looked surprised. Shadow slowly stood. "I want to see how far Rex is willing to go." A dangerous smile appeared beneath the shadows. "Sometimes love destroys people better than bullets." The next morning, rain finally stopped. For the first time in days, sunlight touched the city. Elena stood on the balcony breathing fresh air. The peaceful moment didn't last long. Her phone suddenly vibrated. Unknown number. She answered cautiously. "Hello?" No response. Only breathing. Then a cold male voice whispered: "Stay away from Rex." The call disconnected immediately. Elena's heart raced. Rex noticed her expression. "What happened?" She showed him the phone. "Someone called." Rex's eyes narrowed. "What did they say?" "Stay away from you." A dangerous silence followed. Rex already knew who was responsible. Shadow Hunter was watching. Every move. Every conversation. Every mistake. And that meant Elena was now in even greater danger. Later that afternoon, Rex and Elena traveled across the city searching for information about Phantom. Their investigation led them to an old nightclub connected to underground criminal networks. Music echoed through the building. Suspicious people filled every corner. Elena felt uncomfortable immediately. Rex noticed. "Stay close." The words sounded simple. But something in his voice felt different. Protective. Possessive. Elena couldn't explain why her heart reacted. She followed him through the crowd. Suddenly a drunk man stepped into her path. "Well hello there." Elena immediately moved away. But the stranger grabbed her wrist. Before she could react— CRACK. The man's hand slammed against the table. He screamed in pain. Everyone froze. Rex stood beside Elena. His expression completely emotionless. But his eyes looked dangerous. Very dangerous. The stranger quickly released Elena. "S-sorry!" Rex didn't answer. He simply stared. The man immediately disappeared into the crowd. Elena blinked. "That was intense." Rex looked at her. "He touched you." Elena almost laughed. "That's why you nearly broke his arm?" Rex remained silent. Which was answer enough. For some reason, Elena found the situation strangely adorable. And terrifying. Mostly adorable. Meanwhile, inside a luxury penthouse overlooking the city, Victor Hart watched security footage nervously. His hands trembled. Because he had just learned the truth. Someone above him was controlling everything. Someone even Shadow Hunter feared. Phantom. Victor knew his time was running out. A knock echoed through the room. "Come in." The door opened. A woman stepped inside. Beautiful. Elegant. Deadly. Selene. Victor's face immediately turned pale. "What do you want?" Selene smiled. "Information." Victor swallowed nervously. "And if I refuse?" Selene pulled out a knife. The smile never left her face. "Then this conversation becomes shorter." That evening, Rex and Elena returned to the safehouse. The investigation had provided new clues. But also new enemies. As darkness covered the city, Elena prepared dinner. The scene felt surprisingly normal. Almost like a real home. Almost. Rex sat nearby studying documents. Elena placed a plate in front of him. "You need food." "I'm working." "You need food and work." Rex looked at the plate. Then at Elena. Then at the plate again. Slowly, he started eating. Elena smiled victoriously. "I win." Rex shook his head. "Impossible." "You literally listened to me." "That proves nothing." Elena laughed. The sound filled the room. Warm. Bright. Alive. For a moment, Rex forgot about contracts. Forgot about enemies. Forgot about Shadow Hunter. And that scared him. Because he was beginning to care. More than he should. Hours later, Elena couldn't sleep. The city lights shimmered beyond the windows. She walked into the living room quietly. Only to find Rex already awake. Again. "You never sleep." Rex looked up. "Occupational habit." Elena sat beside him. Closer than usual. Neither moved away. The silence felt comfortable. Then Elena asked softly: "What were you like before all this?" Rex hesitated. Nobody had ever asked. "My father was a police officer." Elena listened carefully. "He died when I was young." Rex's voice remained calm. But his eyes revealed old pain. "The people responsible were never punished." Elena understood. "That's why you joined Shadow Hunter?" Rex nodded. "I wanted power." The confession lingered between them. Then Elena gently touched his hand. A simple gesture. Yet it affected him more than any battle ever had. Their eyes met. For a moment, neither looked away. The world seemed to disappear. Then suddenly— BOOM! An explosion shook the building. Both jumped to their feet. Another explosion followed. The safehouse windows shattered instantly. Enemies. Dozens of them. Rex grabbed his weapon immediately. "We need to move." Gunfire erupted outside. The hunt had begun again. Across the street, Selene watched through a sniper scope. Her finger rested lightly on the trigger. She could see Rex protecting Elena. Guiding her. Shielding her. Always placing himself between danger and her. Selene smiled slightly. Shadow had been right. Rex was changing. And changing men made mistakes. Inside the burning safehouse, Rex and Elena escaped through a rear exit. Bullets struck the walls around them. Cars exploded nearby. The city became chaos. They ran through narrow alleys until the gunfire finally faded. Breathing heavily, Elena leaned against a wall. "We can't keep doing this forever." Rex looked toward the dark skyline. "No." Elena studied his face. "What are you thinking?" For several seconds he remained silent. Then finally answered. "I'm thinking about ending this." Elena frowned. "Ending what?" "The people hunting us." His voice became colder. More dangerous. The assassin had returned. But now he wasn't fighting for money. Or contracts. Or Shadow Hunter. Now he was fighting for someone. And that made him far more dangerous than before. Far away, inside Shadow Hunter headquarters, Shadow stood before a massive screen displaying Rex's location. The mysterious leader smiled. The game was becoming interesting. Very interesting. Because Rex had crossed a line. And there was no returning from it. Shadow slowly whispered into the darkness: "Let's see how possessive love can become." Outside, thunder rolled across the city once again. And somewhere between danger and desire... A war for Elena's heart had already begun. To Be Continued...
