25. Someone got a date

EVERY STEP FELT LIKE A THOUSAND NEEDLES pricking Carmelita’s skin. Bile rose up in her chest as she approached the tent. Her hands became sweaty in anticipation. It didn’t help that Diego had left her side and gone ahead. With all her strength, she marched forward like the warrior that she was. Every person she passed smiled as if they had a ton of gold in their name, although their cheekbones were pronounced and their skin held tightly to their bones. Everyone was grateful to be there. She remembered the students who complained about their living situations. They were more comfortable than this. A roof over their heads and a hot meal four times a day were better than this.
