Chapter 2

My stomach turned again. Because attraction was the last thing I could ever feel toward Christian? Because the man made my skin crawl whenever he was in the same room with me? Because there was no chance in hell I would ever do anything for him that I hadn’t been ordered to do. “I do have to go. The Luna is waiting for me.” I tried to move past him, and he caught my wrists, shoving me back against the wall, and pressing in close to me, so I could feel his body against mine. I tried to hide the disgust and fear on my face, somehow knowing that would only egg him on. He shifted his grip on my wrists so he could hold them with one hand, then his other began to wander over my body. “Please, Beta, I have to go meet the Luna,” I said, my voice shaking as his hand brushed across my breast. He’d never been this bold before. He’s certainly never been in my room before. “Do you think I’m going to let them take you for the first time?” Christian asked, his face in mine. I tried to shrink away from his sour breath, but he just laughed. “I don’t think so. You’re mine. And I will be your first. Now don’t fight. Or do. That would be so much more fun.” Panic tore through me as his hands grew bolder, reaching for my skirt and pulling it up my leg. I was no match for the Beta of the pack. I couldn’t fight him. And, even if I could, I shouldn’t. I would get punished, and I didn’t even want to imagine what the punishment would be for something like that. Still, when his hand slipped under my skirt, rifling through my underthings, I couldn’t stop myself from bringing up a leg and kicking him right where it would hurt him most. Christian’s eyes bulged, and his hold on my hands loosened. I wrenched myself free from his hold and took off around him to the door. My hand had just landed on the knob when Christian grabbed my foot, jerking me off my feet. My head bounced painfully off the stone floor when I fell. I let out a groan as the world spun around me. Then I was being flipped onto my back, and Christian climbed on top of me. Rage transformed his face, and I could see the beginnings of claws forming as his hands went around my throat. “You think you have the right to refuse me?” He hissed in my face, his hands squeezing so I couldn’t draw a breath. He shoved a knee between my legs as I tugged uselessly at his hands around my neck. Tears gathered in the corner of my eyes as I cursed the moon goddess for letting me be born into this pack with no wolf. Why not just make me human, then? Giving up on prying his hands away from my neck, I slammed my fists into his chest, but he didn’t even flinch at the contact. If anything, his smile only grew. His hand was under my skirt again, and he ripped away my undergarments, reaching for the ties on his trousers. Tears slipped out, and my hands flailed around me, looking for anything I could use as a weapon. My hand landed on the shovel I had been using to clean out the ashes in the fireplaces of the guest rooms. I wasn’t thinking any longer as he pushed his trousers down. My hand closed around it, and a second later, it was crashing down on his head. Christian fell to the side, and I scrambled out from under him, clambering to my feet and racing to the door. He was groaning behind me, telling me I hadn’t done enough to knock him out, and werewolves healed fast. My hands shook as I grabbed the door knob and threw the door open, then I dashed out into the hall. I glanced behind me to make sure he wasn’t following, only to slam into a body, and I let out a grunt as I fell backward onto the ground. Thankfully, I didn’t hit my head this time, but, when I looked up, it was to see my brother standing over me. His expression, as always, was nothing but stern disappointment. “What the f**k are you doing, Kiera?” he asked, annoyance filling his voice. “I…” I glanced over my shoulder to see Christian stumbling out of the room. “He…” Kai grabbed my hand and hauled me to my feet, shoving me against the wall. “That is your Beta, and you dared attack him?” “I was defending myself!” I cried as my already sore head collided with the wall. The world was spinning all the harder now, and I felt like I was going to pass out. Kai’s face was in mine in an instant, his hand knotted in my hair. “I don’t care what he was doing to you, got it? You let him. You are nothing. You are worthless, and he is the Beta. You’re lucky I don’t toss you out of here right now.” He hissed. Tears welled in my eyes again at I stared at Kai. Was this the way family was supposed to be? Did they only care about each other if they were useful? “But…” “You’re not even dressed. Alpha Black is going to be here in less than half an hour, and look at you. You look like you’ve been wrestling in the mud all day.” My eyes dropped to the ground, and his hand clenched my hair tighter, forcing me to look up at him. “Get cleaned up and be in his room before we are done with dinner. Do you understand? And, no food for you tonight. You’re going to learn one way or another what your place is here.” His gaze moved to Christian, and he let out a growl, but he let go of my hair and moved to his Beta, herding him along the hallway. Christian glanced back at me once, murder and a promise of retribution in his eyes. My whole body continued to tremble as I realized this was really going to happen. If I didn’t do what Kai told me, I wouldn’t have so much as a home to live in anymore. Tonight, I would have to give my body to a man I didn’t know.
