“You can begin when you are ready,” I tell Sam.
She takes a deep, shaky breath and her eyes get a far away look as she explains the abuse in great detail from the beginning. She tells us when it started, that it wasn’t often at first but that as time went on it became more and more frequent until it became daily and then sometimes multiple times a day. He would beat her and she would beg him to stop until he knocked her out.
