SAMANTHA
Elara reached over the take for my hands and I quickly placed them on hers, hoping for a little bit of comfort and wishing I could draw strength from her.
“I understood what you meant when you said that it wasn’t Zach and Clarence’s fault because I know what it’s like to have a fated mate. You won’t be able to resist no matter how much you try. You want to be around them all the time, kiss them, touch them. Just have them with you. It would have killed Zach if your father and his found out and killed Clarence and he would have taken it out on you. Your marriage with him would have been disastrous too so in the end, I’m glad you found out and left.”
I nodded, “Yeah. I’m glad I left but then, I just had to find my fated mate after that,”
“Conrad is not that bad,”
“Oh yes, he is. I found him f*****g a woman in the garden while that ball was taking place in the palace,” I said before I could stop myself and Elara did not even show any sign of surprise making me think that it was not that first time such a thing was happening.
Instead, she winced and said, “Maybe he is. That man likes f*****g everything up. If someone had told him that he would find his fated mate while he is buried deep in another woman I’m sure he would never have believed,”
“I would never have believed either if I was told. Girl, I was shocked and disgusted and…” I stopped the last word that was about to leave my mouth. I had just nearly told Elara that I’d been turned on from seeing her brother f*****g another woman.
No, that was not really about him f*****g another woman. It was his face. The expression on it. The little furrow of his brows. His eyes shining with lust and his parted lips as groans and grunt escaped them.
“And what?” Elara asked, her head c****d to the side and her eyes glowing with curiosity.
“Nothing.” I decided to change the topic before Elena would push me into confessing such an embarrassing thing, “What am I going to do now? Your cousin knows who I am and I’m very sure he won’t let me be,”
“Goodness gracious, I’m already having a headache from hearing you ask how you are going to deal with Conrad. That man is a massive headache.”
“He should come with a warning label,”
He did, a voice in my head supplied. You literally caught him f*****g another woman. That should be enough warning for you.
The voice was right. That was a very big warning and I should be running for the hills but where else did I know? Who else could help me? I cannot remain here and I definitely cannot go back home. Everything that was happening was causing me to feel suffocated as if I was caught in a trap without a chance of escape.
“Sam, do you want Conrad?”
"'What?' I asked, taken aback by her question. “Absolutely not!” I recoiled at the idea.
I wanted nothing to do with someone who had such a notorious reputation for womanizing and so many other things. I’d rather die alone.
“Good, because Conrad also does not want to keep any woman. His mother had been forcing him to get married for years so that she can have a grandchild and for the pack to have an heir and Conrad has refused to do so. He said he wanted nothing to do with a mate and he hoped to never find her,”
I flinched at Elara’s words. I could not help it. What was this searing pain in my chest at the thought of Conrad, my mate, wanting nothing to do with me because he would rather be with different women every day? The thought was like a knife to the heart.
I could feel my wolf howling in my head, but I pressed her back because I knew letting her out would only make me feel the full weight of the heartbreak Elara’s words had cost her.
I swallowed thickly as I met Elara’s eyes with a blank expression, hoping that she had not been paying enough attention to notice my reaction to her earlier words because nothing went past this woman’s eyes.
“That’s fine by me. If he wants to reject me then I’m all for it too,”
No!!
I ignored my wolf’s scream and continued speaking like a robot devoid of emotion — I wished that I was really a robot— hoping that I wouldn't break down in the process and make Elara see the turmoil that was going on inside me.
“I’m tired of going with just anything I’m handed. I’ve just escaped from one prison, I’ll be damned before I get caught up in another,”
Something flashed in Elara’s eye, it was gone before I could figure out what it was.
“If that’s what you want then I’m all for it but I want you to think about it deeply. You don’t want to make any more mistakes,”
“You just said that Conrad does not want a mate or a wife or a Luna. Even if I want him, only I cannot make the relationship work,”
A look of regret filled Elara’s eyes, “I shouldn’t have said anything.”
“He would have said it anyways,”
“Yeah, but it’s not in my place,”
“No, it’s not but I think it’s better than hearing it from him. How would you feel if Harold was to tell you that he did not want you?” Elara flinched as a strong emotion appeared in her eyes, “Exactly. You saved me, Elara. At least I would be prepared for when he says it to my face. I’m sure that’s the reason he’s been looking for me and also why he gave my diner the contract,”
“Nope. Conrad won’t give out that contract if your diner is not good enough. The occasion is important. He told your manager you’re the reason just so he would make you feel jumpy. My cousin is evil like that,”
He definitely is.
